My cousin is visiting London for a few months, working near Covent Garden. He wants vegetarian restaurants, cheap is good.

Suggestions?

Mildred's - in Soho, not far from Covent Garden. I think Frith Street or Greek Street perhaps Dean Street. Try googling. Have eaten there many times, food excellent, very unpretentious small restaurant. I know its still there, have seen recent reviews, still staying food excellent.

Otherwise, there's quite a big Cranks in Covent Garden. Also excellent, but more of a chain IYSWIM.

try photographers gallery cafe
great newport street, few minutes down longacre from covent garden
nice rolls fillings and selections, lovely cakes, juices all reasonable prices
free papers mags to look at in exhibition setting

and mildreds in soho,
there was always hearty fare in there

NotQuiteCockney · 27/10/2007 21:27

Oh, it doesn't have to be vegetarian, vegetarian-friendly is good.

This always used to be good but I haven't been recently.

Food for Thought on Neal St - cheap, veggie and in Covent Garden. A good lunch stop - also does take outs.

Marina · 28/10/2007 09:28

Not to mention lots of S Indian veggie places around town, esp. near Euston station, such as the Diwana Bhel Poori House
Is it Rasa that's the small chain as well?

MegBusset · 28/10/2007 09:29

Food For Thought has serious hygiene issues imo. (Used to get lunch from there until sick of finding chunks of gravel, long hairs etc in food -- eurgh.)

Much better is Neals Yard Salad Bar, just round the corner, certainly for lunch.

i believe Cranks closed their cafes ages ago? Could be mistaken...

Masala Zone, which is where Cranks used to be off Carnaby Street, has very good and cheap Indian food with plenty of veggie options.

KashaSarrasin · 28/10/2007 09:51

Second the suggestion of the S Indian places on Drummond St near Euston. Diwana is the best IMHO, but Chutneys and Ravi Shankar also good.

Also the Beatroot cafe on Berwick Street, they do lovely vegan cakes

MegBusset · 28/10/2007 09:53

Ooh yes I had forgotten about Beatroot.

Also the Vita organic vegan cafe on Wardour Street is lovely (if a little, er, cosy!).

aDadGoneMad · 28/10/2007 09:57

Agree with all the indian ideas - Massala Zone, Ravi Shankar and Rasa are great.

The dosas at Ravi Shankar are amazing.
Rasa is in Stoke Newington so maybe a bit out of the way.

Not very central, but the Gate in Hammersmith is great.

aDadGoneMad · 28/10/2007 10:20

I remember eating lovely veggie food in Kerala!

Well, Franny doesn't spend that much time in central London, so I thought I'd pick MN's brains on this one ...

Oh yes - The Gate is definitely worth a visit - weird location pretty much on the hammersmith roundabout but lovely.

ghoulmoonfiend · 28/10/2007 10:46

I was teasing NQC, only because F&Z has found the Neal's yard place mentioned by lennygirl in covent garden. She can sniff out a tasty lentil morsel 100 miles away....
