Nice hotel Birmingham suggestions

I've booked Opheem restaurant in Birmingham for DH's birthday in a few months time.

Can anyone suggest a nice hotel that is walking distance, near some nice bars.

Hotel Du Vin, without a doubt! The suites are a great price right now too (have booked for in a couple of months too). Really lovely pub downstairs in the hotel, champagne bar upstairs and great breakfast. The bathrooms are huge!

It is also near the botanist & the alchemist which are good cocktail bars.

Hmmm I've looked at hotel du vin and I'm put off by a lot of negative reviews. The photos don't look like it's very luxurious. More trying hard to be quirky but actually pretty basic.

Macdonald Burlington: it’s the old Midland Railway Hotel. Very handy for New St Station and a good place.

@stroopwafelgirl I've been looking at that one.. is it a long way from the jewellery quarter? I'm rubbish at judging maps! Is it a walk or a taxi ride do you know?

Yep but the jewellery quarter (whilst lovely) can be a bit of a pain in the arse to get to - even if you’re staying in the city centre! It’s definitely worth an Uber to get you from A to B though, and it wouldn’t be more than £5-7 for a trip. Hope you have a great time!

Also looking at the Hyatt regency and raddison blu (I stay at a lot of raddisons with work so at least I know what I'm getting there and they've always been good, was just looking for something a bit more special)

I stayed at the mailbox years ago (a lot of years ago!) and it was nice back then but the website now looks really tacky so I'm assuming that's gone down hill?

Yes Malmaison has gone downhill unfortunately.

I see what you mean about HdV, after recommending I had a look at the site and the pictures aren’t great - in fact some of the carpets look horribly dated. I can vouch for the top suite though.

If you want similar at the Hyatt you will need a jr suite, it is quite nice as floor to ceiling windows overlooking the city.

I would say -

• The Edgbaston for something special it's out of town but lovely and superb restaurant

• Hilton Garden Inn Brindleyplace - bit corporate but great location

Hotel Indigo at the Cube - I haven't been buy looks good


Depending on when you are going The Grand is meant to open later this year as well.

Ps Opheem is on the edge of the Jewellery Quarter but faces into town so you don't need to stay in the JQ although it's lovely there aren't decent hotels there, maybe serviced apartments.

Aktar Islam from Opheem has also just opened Pulperia at Brindleyplace.

I came on here to suggest Hdv. I haven’t been in a while so not sure whether the reviews you’ve seen are fair. The service is always pretty good and location wise it would suit you as it’s within walking distance of the JQ.
The Edgbaston would be lovely and just a short Uber away. There’s also the Edgbaston Park hotel on the edge of the Uni which is nice.

Hotel indigo at the cube (just by the mailbox) is very nice - rooms are on 23-24 th floors with a cocktail bar at the 25th floor. Breakfast is very swanky and served in the Marco Pierre white restaurant with great views of the city - the bar is worth a visit even if you don't stay there

Not The Edgbaston - though the Edgbaston is also great!
Opposite each other and normally done in succession so I got confused!

Well I've just booked the Hyatt regency have weighed up pros and cons of various hotels. I'm sure we'll have a lovely weekend whatever .
