Holiday in Devon: most restaurants etc still closed

I’ve been checking our holiday resort in Devon for the last week of July and all our usual restaurants are still closed. I’m a bit gutted as I guess I’ll have to cook for the week.

I’m really surprised places like Rockfish have stopped doing takeaways etc.

What are other people planning to do for UK holidays? Plan meals or just turn up and hope?

Was planning to see how things are and then do a mixture of restaurants if open, takeaways, and if really stuck either ready meals, supermarket pizza or cheese / ham / bread type buffet every night.

I think if you go, you sort of have to take this into account. It will be a different holiday.

TBH I live in the SW and there is a lot of worry over holiday makers bringing covid to this area.

Some cafes are opening up this week, by the end of July id have thought it will be slightly more normal than it is now. NT properties are gradually opening up and some have pop up coffee shops kiosks.

Can you do a supermarket shop and eat in more?

FrugiFan · 11/07/2020 15:53

We usually book a supermarket delivery to arrive at the holiday home, as we dont eat out for every meal anyway (and it saves having to shop for cereal, milk, teabags etc when you arrive)
I'm surprised that nowhere is open - round our way (New Forest) everywhere is open and encouraging tourists to visit. They've already lost out on 50% of the summer season and need the income

We do a big shop when we arrive anyway. As long as there are one or two take away or delivery options then we’ll make do and cook the rest of the time.

I've been cooking, the takeaways were open and had great fish and chips.

Some restaurants seemed to be open

We're currently visiting relatives in Devon. Rockfish was open near the national marine aquarium. We've had dinner in a lovely Japanese restaurant and there was also a greek and Italian restaurant open to dine in as well.

A lot of the shops and restaurants, if not yet open, had signs on the doors saying when they would be and a lot seem to be opening from next week.

Don't count on getting fed at attractions like farms etc best seems to be a coffee and crisps.

If you plan on going to any zoos etc you'll probably need to book before you arrive to get what you want.

I hope you have fun, it's lovely down here.

Just returned from a week near exmouth
Most places were open or are opening this weekend. It actually felt strange just going into cafes and restaurants.
Just check the services on the way down not all those on the a303 had their toilets open! (But they would sell you food and drink) Confused

We are going to the Lakes in August and we are planning to eat in more than normal.

I quite enjoy cooking and will have good helpers so it won't be a drag. Supermarket shop for basics before I go and then a trip to Booths for some nice treats.

Planning to do outdoor activities- walks/parks/NT gardens etc. and hopefully take DS swimming at some point. Thankfully we like the outdoors.

Plus, it will be nice to chill at the cottage.

It may not be the normal holiday but we will enjoy it anyway.

We're going to a holiday cottage next week and we're planning to self cater much more than we normally would. Also a bit worried about test & trace as DH can't afford to self isolate, so a bit worried about having to all because we went in a pub when could've had a beer at the cottage! We will definitely get fish & chips on the beach one day and perhaps another take away or 2. Cottage has a bbq (fingers crossed for bbq weather) and will do simple meals the rest of the time and packed lunch when out for the day. Will also take lots of wineGrin
