Unusual weekend rental for 9 adults

I'm trying to find a weekend rental place that's quirky/out of the ordinary for 9 adults next spring. Budget of approx a grand. A canal boat has been suggested but although you can get ones with enough berths I think it will be hellishly cramped

Try the Landmark Trust, or the National Trust. Both do unusual properties.

Or you could hire two boats? A river cruiser would have more space than a barge.

We'd need 4 bedrooms as it's 3 couples and 3 older teens - but yeah I did wonder if it was enough of a budget.

I've no experience of canal boats but do you think I'm right that 9 on one boat would be hellish?

I've been on a weekend on the Thames a few times where there have been 4 couples. It worked quite well.

There's always something to do on a boat - locks etc, and you can get off and walk too if you feel like a bit of solitude - boats don't move very fast.
And you can stop off to visit pubs and other items of interest as the fancy takes you.

This would be very cool but a bit out of budget! houseboat.

Straysocks · 09/07/2020 13:46

Have a look at the Cool Stays website, lots of choice

Lightsabre · 09/07/2020 14:41

@FanSpamTastic, wow, that is amazing!

Coalport Station www.coalportstation.com, The Windmill Aylesbury or Llancayo Windmill

These all sleep 9 or more....Boat houses, castles, country houses...

Might be more than the budget though...go on treat yourselves, I have my eye on one or two for a big family event and have stayed in the cottages in the grounds of one two...idyllic.

Where in the country are you and whats the upper limit for travelling?

Grumpbum123 · 09/07/2020 17:42

I’d suggest looking at cool stays as well

Another vote for Landmark Trust, they have some amazing properties. They also lent them (for free I think) to NHS staff at the start of lock down to help with their mental health which I thought was a pretty awesome thing to do

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 09/07/2020 17:50

You may need to go back to the others on budget. £50 per perspn per night isn't really going to get you anything unique.

Srictlybakeoff · 09/07/2020 18:45

That one is a link to Scotland but they seem to have places through the uk

CurlyhairedAssassin · 09/07/2020 19:27

which region? And would it be school holiday time? In Easter hols places book up fast and obviously the prices rise a lot.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 09/07/2020 19:29

More importantly, what will you need for the teens to keep them happy? I would think wifi would be a must whatever activities they'r einto.
Nothing more annoying than sharing a holiday with grumpy teens, especially when they're not your own!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 09/07/2020 19:31

and consider how many bathrooms you would be happy with between 9, or you could be waiting a long time to get out anywhere in the morning.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 09/07/2020 19:34

Also, canal boat may not be great for the weekend. I've been boating on the Norfolk Broads 3 times now and you have to get your boat back to the same boatyard, which is fine for a week cos it's enough time to go far enough adn back again for it to be interesting. But if you are going for only 3 nights you won't see much in under a day and a half before you'd have to turn round again.

Forgot to say Youth Hostels are available for exclusive booking at the moment. Usually have a games room for young people. Not very luxurious though...

JaJaDingDong · 10/07/2020 18:13

Curley we've taken a boat from Lechlade (source of the Thames) all the way to Oxford and back in a weekend.
I agree about the Broads though. Not a lot to see.
