Weekend break in UK, with kids and not too far from London

Hi, I'm after recommendations for a weekend break at most a few hours from London - anywhere!

I like the sea, but also like cities and pretty, rural villages. We've pencilled the last weekend of half-term, which I know is soon, so may miss out in the best accommodation. But that's OK. We like hotels, but also pub accommodation, so we are pretty flexible. DC are 7 and 11. We are totally open to ideas if anyone knows anywhere lovely.
