Accommodation near Edinburgh?

Dh and I have got a few days to ourselves in August (special anniversary!) so are thinking of coming up to Edinburgh, soaking up some of the festival and mooching around the surrounding area.
I know accommodation in the centre is likely to be a) booked up and b) really expensive, so we're hoping to find somewhere outside the centre that still feels like a treat.
We tend to stay in smaller hotels / B&Bs and like eco / green places etc. We'll have a car so can be a few miles outside the city.
Does anyone have any recommendations? I've looked at visitscotland but not been inspired yet!

I’d head towards perth and use a combination of car and public transport to get in and out of Edinburgh. Kinross area is nice as it’s on Loch Leven or may be try Dunblane or Linlithgow.

Also consider towards the borders so Haddington, North Berwick, Gullane.

If you've got a car you don't want to be driving into Edinburgh so I'd look for somewhere with good public transport connections. North Berwick if you'd like to be by the sea. Maybe somewhere on the borders railway line?
