London without the kids for 3 nights, WWYD?

Me and DH organising a 3 night trip to London to celebrate my big birthday next summer.

I lived there for over a decade in east London but worked all over and have done a lot of the sights, museums, parks. We also visit with the kids every year to visit pals.

So, I'm after recommendations of places to eat and drink, wander about, see things that are a bit of the beaten track, and ideas of things me and DH could do that we couldn't do with the kids in kids in tow. What are your favourite grown up things to do in London?

Denis severs house by candlelight is really cool! If you want something cultural

If you want a beautiful spa, espa at the corinthia is amazing, you could spend 5 hours there.

My brother is in town end of month and we are going for lunch in the shard - you could do a special restaurant.

If you like cocktails - mr foggs in Mayfair is fun!

Realise all these options are super pricey.... Not sure what your budget is?!

Have you done all the English Heritage/NT places in London? Eg Kenwood, Apsley House, Chiswick House?

CakeAndGin · 15/10/2019 20:38

For our anniversary we went to a restaurant called ikoyi. It’s west African food and a tasting menu, so you don’t pick the menu. Honestly, some of the things on the menu I probably wouldn’t have picked (one was a January cabbage Hmm and I was skeptical about paying that much for cabbage) but it was gorgeous. Every single dish was fantastically cooked and the wine pairing with it was perfect.

Liking a lot of these. We are NTS members so that's a good shout. Cocktails always good, did wonder about going up the Shard. Love the idea of west African food - have had Eritrean food before - and thank DH would like that.

Budget pretty big, so keep the suggestions coming.

I absolutely love the royal Albert Hall so that would be on my list too and hope something good on that night

Breakfast up the Shard.
Gordon's wine bar.
Dinner at the Wolsey.
With a big budget I'd see something at the ROH.

soupmaker · 16/10/2019 22:57

@avamiah I know, we're never normally this organised!!

Thanks, @MinnieMountain Gordon's Wine Bar a great shout.

A gig somewhere is on the list. Not sure about chocolate tasting but the afternoon tea idea would work.

Wander round Shoreditch/Hackney - it's changed a lot! Ditto Kings Cross. River boat to Kew Gardens, some nice rooftop places to have a drink, usually in the cool hotels - see the Time Out Gujde. The postal train.

soupmaker · 17/10/2019 17:07

@Lightsabre Thanks. Liking the idea of a boat trip to Kew, and roof top bars. We did the postal train with the kids - loved it - and wandered about Kings Cross, what a transformation.

Jack The Ripper Tour?

FanSpamTastic · 05/11/2019 23:06

Go and make your own gin in Portobello Road - at the ginstitute.

DefConOne · 06/11/2019 15:36

Gordon's Wine Bar. Wandering around Greenwich and stopping at a river side pub. Book a gig for a band you like. Big exhibition in the V&A/British Museum/Tate Modern. That's what I like to with DH on the very rare chance of a trip to London.

soupmaker · 07/11/2019 20:24

Thanks everyone. Gordon's Wine Bar on the list. A big exhibition a good idea @DefConOne and a gig. Looking at places to eat now, might need to get booked early as I fancy somewhere with stars for lunch!!

I have recommended this before - promise I am not on commission - but we had a fabulous evening at the ginstitute. Nb only if you like gin.

FanSpamTastic · 22/11/2019 23:53

Doh - but drunk - thought I was on active - seem to have ended up on "I'm on" and in same chain! Soz!
