Things to do in and around the Staithes / Whitby area

We are going on holiday and staying near Staithes at the end of August. Myself, DH, DS, 13 and DD, 9. We have never visited the area before and are looking for things to do. DS has said he would like to visit a castle and maybe a wildlife park. DD is pretty happy with anything but loves the beach and anything to do with animals.

Any tips on where to go and things to do would be great, thank you.

A boat trip on the Bark Endeavour www.endeavourwhitby.com
The tour (about an hour and a half) down Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum is good www.ironstonemuseum.co.uk

Ahh, I love Staithes.. It's very governed by tides- so you'll need a tide table so not to get caught out...

We've spent lots of time there crabbing on the harbour wall. Lots and lots of rock pools when the tide is out. We've also seen seals on the beach there whilst just walking. (They are highly camouflaged against the grey docks so keep your eyes peeled.)

Check out what day the lifeboat goes out to practice- I used to love sitting on the breakwater watching them launch..

The royal George pub does good food.

We've had lovely fish and chips in Whitby and you can go on boat trips from their harbour. Have fun!!

Camouflaged against grey rocks that should read - not docks!!!

Get a steam train on the North York Moors Railway from Whitby to Pickering, it's a nice little town with the Beck Isle museum and a castle.

It’s Whitby Folk Week 17-23 Aug. Will you be there then? It’s great fun, even if you don’t go to any events, there are clog dancers in the streets etc.

Climb Roseberry Topping?
The Rotunda Museum in Scarborough is interesting, if you are interested in geology, natural history etc.

Pickering is near Flamingoland. Big rides, smaller rides and zoo.

There is a staithes trail which you can download and follow - you have to find clues and answer questions. It's great fun and will
Kill a couple of hours. Crab and lobster pub is amazing too

Go to Whitby Abbey Sat/Sun when they are doing dramatisation of Dracula.

Castle Howard is super. As both DC like animals check if your stay coincides with Countryfile live there for 3 days. Look for discounted tickets online.

Scarborough has sealife centre for a rainy day. Dolphins have been spotted in the bay recently & we saw them from the beach there just on a day trip last summer. Peaseholm Park still does an old school & free miniature battle ships enactment (check days) & mini golf in lovely setting.
