City break with 12 year old - North of England or Scotland

Hi
I wonder if anyone can recommend a city in the North of England /Scotland that would have plenty to do for 12 year old dd? We have just spent the weekend in Glasgow with its fantastic museums and things to do so looking for something similar.
Somewhere with both indoor and outdoor options, city centre location with pool ideally, we like non stuffy museums, shopping, crazy golf type places, park to sit in if it’s nice etc.
Any suggestions? Was thinking Liverpool possibly but open to ideas.

Liverpool or Edinburgh I would say!

Newcastle

We went to York this year for the first time. We loved it. Great places to eat, Harry Potter Diagon Alley type place (The Shambles), Jorvik museum. Worth a google perhaps.

Edinburgh, definitely. I'd recommend going on a Cadies and Witcheries tour, Camera Obscura, the Real Mary King, the excellent Dynamic Earth attraction, Edinburgh Dungeon and the zoo (with a pair of giant pandas on loan from China). Cosmo is a good place to take kids for a treat. Its a all-you-can-eat buffet with a bit of style. It's got a bottomless ice cream bar and a chocolate fountain! Perfect for ravenous teenagers.

York.

1st Choice: York
2nd Choice: Newcastle

I would also vote for Edinburgh, but personally didn’t like dynamic earth

Edinburgh! Although it will be pretty much entirely booked out until September now due to the fringe and international festivals.

Definitely Liverpool, there is tons to do.
Ferry across Mersey, slavery museum, maritime museum, Tate gallery, Walker Art gallery, world museum, 2 cathedrals which often have art installations.
Anfield tour, Beatles tours, fab shopping.

My kids loved the Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh but were otherwise underwhelmed. It's very very touristy and crowded in the centre - coach parties everywhere.

They loved Manchester - getting the tram, science museum, war museum, Salford Quays etc

Newcastle

Honestly I think Hull might be better than York and I say this as someone who has lived in York.
Hull has a lot of free museums and the fantastic Aquarium.
Not sure about hotels because we took day trips.

PickAChew · 23/07/2019 23:22

Newcastle. Hancock, Life Science centre, bloody good shopping and lots of interesting food, plus Greggs!

flissfloss65 · 23/07/2019 23:25

We spent 3 nights in Edinburgh and my ds loved it. Harry Potter tour, ghost tour, visit zoo. We also went on the Hairy Coo day trip to the countryside. Really want to go back.

York, Edinburgh or Manchester - loads to see and do particularly for that age- we took DS as a 12 yo to all these cities and had a fab time Smile We had got to the age where a UK seaside holiday had become boring for him but found lots to see and do in all three cities.

reluctantbrit · 27/07/2019 14:49

We did York or Edinburgh and really enjoyed both.

Singleandproud · 27/07/2019 14:52

We did Edinburgh and Glasgow last year. Used booking.com and managed to get really cheap summer accommodation in Student Halls.

GetUpAgain · 27/07/2019 14:52

I went to Newcastle for work which involved visiting some museums and spent the whole time thinking 'DD would love this ' - she is also 12. It has a really nice feel to it.

twinsrunmylife · 27/07/2019 14:54

I'd vote York, it's a beautiful city and so much to do!!

Disfordarkchocolate · 27/07/2019 14:58

Edinburgh
Newcastle
York (please do the cold war bunker, it's amazing).

All excellent

happytoday73 · 27/07/2019 19:31

York is lovely and has loads to do but all costs... Very little for free and lots history based. Edinburgh is good but will be busy/booked out so might be best to hold for half term!

Manchester and Liverpool both have lots of free options. Both quite different from each other so depends on what like.
If do Manchester consider chilfactore and indoor skydiving both near Trafford Centre if want some adventure...

Teddybear45 · 27/07/2019 19:34

I’d recommend the Lake District. Lots of outdoors stuff to do and see.

Pekkanekka · 01/08/2019 13:36

We went to York with our teens a had a brilliant time.

We're also looking for ideas for this summer for places as good as York...!
