Squonk or anyone else who know Scarborough and surrounds well-Whats happening with Flamingo Land?

We're off to Scarborough next weekend.
I tried to get onto the flamingo land website today for directions etc and it won't open. I then discovered that is been getting done up. Can anyone tell me when it will be reopening and is it suitable for a 3.5 year old?
Also, does anyone have any recommendations for this age of child for things to do? I know about Peasholm park, Kinderland looks good too. anything else?

flier. sorry to break it to you, but Kinderlad is No More They are turning the site into a poncey appartments and 'leisure complex' . Twill be sadly missed.
I don't know about Flamingoland, being closed, but there are lots of little rides and the zoo bit and seal show etc is great for little children. Sea life centre in scarboro is well worth a visit (has soft play bit too). If weather is bad, there is also a nice soft play place near Morrisons (on the outskirts)

My boys always just like being on the beach...whatever the weather!
Your toddler will also love te little train which goes from Peasholm to Sealife Centre and back again.

Flamingoland has rides for little kids too. Donkeys on the beach. We had a nice meal out at Tricollos which was very child-friendly.

Sad to hear about Kinderland as it looked like it would be good, too.

it was, it was lovely (and my boys were old enough to enable me to sit in the sunshine and read while occasionally looking up to check they hadn't done anything dreadful to

my PILs are in scarborough so I know it extremely well from a child-friendliness point of view. (My FIL is a grumpy ol' man so when my youngest was awake at 5am, I was often to be seen walking in the rain with the buggy until a more civilised time... But I did get to find out whih coffee shops are open ridiculously early

Kinderland is open weekends at the moment (had a stay of execution for one more season) but I've heard it's getting a bit run down - Scarborough council messing about every year changing their minds about what to do with it so nobody's put any investment in. It's a big shame - I remember it fondly from when I was a kid. haven't been myself recently tho as my lo is only 18m so maybe it's not as bad as people say?

Would definitely recommend Soft play by Morrisons (called Little Hoppers) there's a big toddler bit with ride on's, wendy house and a couple of slower slides. It gets busy on wet weekends tho.

Also really recommend Playdale Farm park at cayton (just south of Scarborough). It's got most of the animals under cover and you can feed goats, lambs etc. Then a big play barn, loads of play tractors, an outside climbing bit, covered sand pit etc. I went with my DS and my godson 2.5 and they loved it. Would be great for your son.

I was at Flamingoland at Easter and nothing was said about it closing,was hoping to go back again soon.

do you know why it's closed,it had already been done up when we visited so don't know what else they could be doing.

I've only been in Scarborough twice and both times we took the kids to Kinderland and they loved it. It was really busy both times too.

Geordiecat thanks for the info. Playdale farm park sounds terrific, and soft play at Morrisons might be just the ticket for any rainy days-of course the sun is gonna be shining while we're there .

We went to Cayton beach a lot 'cause we were very near it - much quieter if you prefer that and a van nearby for snacks!

Yesterday was pretty terrible weather wise. My DH was on a course in Hull and took over 6 hours to get home. No bad flooding in Scarborough though - think we were just on the edge of it.

It's not raining today but a bit windy and cold - pack a jumper!

Think there's still floods around and roads closed in Pickering and over Wolds but should be Ok if you're not coming til weekend - presuming it doesn't start raining again!

We went to Flamingo Land at Easter and no signs to say it was closing. Did look like a needed a bit of refreshing though TBH. We took two 5yo and there were plenty of rides for younger children. Food is rubbish inside, take picnic!

oh BTW, food is rubbish at Kinderland too...take picnic!

There is also a nice little palce on way into Scarborough called the Betton honey farm. There is a small petting zoo, sandpit, little tractors, farm shop/cafe and an outdoor play area. My boys both enjoyed it. (IIRC, there was an honesty box for the petting zoo/playground. Also a birds of prey centre, but this looked a little sad so we didn't bother.

Oh a great idea for a rainier day (though quite expensive) is the North Yorks Moors Railway. my Thomas mad boys always enjoyed that.

Take swimming gear and you can always go swimming (indoor pool, pretty basic but has a learner pool)

Ohhhhhh this has reminded me of our trip to Flamingoland when I was about 12. It was fabulous. My first rollercoaster ride. Fond memories.

hi, we were at scarborough in april and kinderland is being re deloped, the area next to it IS being turned into exec apartments and the pool with be transformed into under cover one, wether it will be for public or just ownder of apartments i dont know?
peasolm park is nice for picnic etc, but not much else to do, we visited castle ruins when we went, theres a few little parks on the very steep walk up
flamingo land IS getting lots of new rides put in at minute(again there in april)(brother in law was there last week), there is a new area near the wooden play ground which is bumper car type things that squirt water at oblivious passers by!!!..we all go each year for my dd's brithday and she loves it, lots of smaller rides for them, the proffessor bubble show is a definate must, my dd and her cousin lurve it and the dads will to as his assistants wear bum skimming skirts!

the train ride is a fave of dd's too as was the sea lion show last time!..lots and lots of fun, even if it is £20 to get in now, although you Lo will get in free as 4 and under are free..hope this helps

Thanks everyone. Glad you said that about the food at flamingoland&Kinderland, as when I looked at the website yesterday, it looked like there were plenty of places to eat/choose from. Will take a picnic now though

flamingo land isnt too bad food wise, burgers abrs, sandwhich shop, two or three resterraunts and the fish n chip shop near the frog hopper ride(towards back ) is gorgeous!!

just seen this - as far as I know Flamingoland is open again - plenty to do for younger kids. Food is just like at any other theme park - overpriced tosh, but sometimes that is just what you need! Rides are great, zoo is fab as well, make sure you have a whole day there.

Scarborough has loads as well - although I drove past Cayton Bay the other day and they seem to be doing loads of roadworks, but that won't detract from the beauty of the bay itself.

If you have time, you should take in a day at Whitby/Robin Hoods Bay - more to do with the children in Whitby, but RHB is gorgeous.

Weather forecast so far is rain towards the end of this week, but then it is due to brighten up. They are not expecting any rain that does fall to affect the flood situation (although Scarborough itself ok afaik) so obviously not torrential rain due.

oo yes, squonk, robin bhood's bay was var beautiful. Just watch your small child doesn't run off into that smugglers' tunnel. Freaked me out a bit.

you know my sister keeps going on about sands end and i think its called robin hoods bay..the place were you can drive the car around and over the tiny bridge that has sand/underneath that fills up at high tide???
