1/2 night break with kids near London after New Year?

Hi everyone

Just wondered if anyone can recommend somewhere I could go with the kids for one or two nights in the week after New Year. I’m a single mum and need to use public transport - looking for somewhere not too far from London with something to do in the day. DSs are 4 and nearly 7.

In the summer we went to Brighton and then half term Warwick and Warwick castle both of which worked really well. So something similar!

Birmingham? There is a great Science Museum, BBC experience (need to book), shopping, regenerated canal area and good shopping/eating. Not an obvious choice I know but quick and ds (teen) and I had a night there and it was fun!

Ditto Liverpool, but further away (though a quick 2 hrs on train). Fabulous museums, ferry, Beatles experience

I second Birmingham, although I wouldn't take children that young to the BBC experience. The Science centre is definitely worth going to. There's also an aquarium and Legoland Disocvery Centre which you can get combi tickets for.

Belated thanks for the replies - my eldest is Lego mad so Birmingham is a great suggestion ( I ended up going to York but am doing Birmingham this half term).
