It's for partner's birthday ,but more of a short break .

We're in SE London and would prefer to travel by train .

Like self catering as opposed to hotel ,thinking airbnb .

Considered York .Cambridge but not feeling the love somehow .

Any suggestions to motiviate me v gratefully accepted .

How about Bath? Apart from the Roman Baths, there's a Jane Austin Museum, the famous Sally Lunn tea rooms and lots of other museums and galleries. You can also get coach trips out to Stonehenge.

I’d suggest the blue rooms at the blue bicycle in York. They might make you reconsider.

Moreton in Marsh or Kingham in Gloucestershire have direct trains from London. Absolutely gorgeous.

I'd recommend Salisbury, apparently the cathedral is lovely and it has a 123m spire.

Sorry, couldn't resist!

Peterborough.

Seriously now... I have had some lovely weekends in York, Ripon, Chester (tho the museums aren't good there), Shrewsbury is lovely.

York is perfect. Or Edinburgh?
