First family holiday abroad booked. What will i need?!

Hi, first time posting here, I have just booked our first holiday abroad next July for 10 days. We will be taking my toddler son (will nearly be 3) and also my step daughter (will be 12)
Just wondering how much of everything I will need to take? Or any extras any mums can recommend to help our trip be the nice holiday I want it to be. ie how much suncream, changes of clothes etc?

Thanks for any advice :)

Pack a jumper and socks for the flight home. I'm not joking, the flight home is always cold!

Make sure you tell your bank so your card doesn't get refused.

EHIC cards, plug adaptors and insect repellent are musts. The cards entitle you to health care in Europe and are free.

Ehic might not be valid next year! Lots of suncream. An extension cable and travel adaptors

Best tip I ever heard: Lay out all the clothes you think you’ll need, then put half of them back in the wardrobe.

Second best tip: Check your tickets, passport, money and medication, then check them again, and after you’ve done that, check them again. If you forget anything else you can buy it.

What you take depends on where you're going and what accommodation you've booked.

Is it a hotel or self catering? Will you have a washing machine? Where are you going?

SusannahD · 14/08/2018 18:59

If you haven’t already get insurance now for it.

We are going to Turkey for an all inclusive trip. I will have insurance for us all and also EHIC (if still valid then)
Would 2 bottles of suncream each be enough for anyone who has been? Im only going to be getting SPF 50 minimum for the children (I would normally use just under 2 bottles myself on an 8 day trip)
Thanks again x

Don't think ehic card is valid in Turkey anyway?

The things I wished I'd taken when we went to Portugal with dd when she was 10 month's, Calpol ( I wasn't brave enough to try supositries on her but my Portuguese wasn't fab either), our own preferred brands of nappy rash & some nappies ( we think she had a reaction to the nappies so it would have been reassuring to just have a few to pop her in). Also some travel hand wash if you can't get to a machine. Enjoy it, we had a fab time it was very relaxing

My tip would be to split your clothes into different suitcases, so if a case went missing, you’d have clothes in another.

ReservoirDogs · 14/08/2018 22:19

Ensure passports have at least 6 months on them for return date

mnahmnah · 14/08/2018 22:19

We went for 10 days recently. We used 1 bottle of sun cream for both DC (1 and 6 yo) but it was Boots Soltan Once, SPF 50 for kids, which lasts a few hours, so you use less. I used less than one bottle of the same stuff but factor 30, and I burn easy. Didn’t burn at all. Brilliant stuff and really cuts down on your luggage weight!

AdaColeman · 14/08/2018 22:35

Apply for your passports in good time. If you hide them away somewhere "safe" make a note of where they are so you're not hunting for them at the last minute.

When packing, don't take a jumble of clothes, make sure tops/skirts/trousers all go together, eg take a multi coloured skirt & 3 tops that go with it. That way you will need to take fewer items.

Take a small basic first aid kit.

A letter from the step child's other parent giving permission for her to be taken out of the country. Particularly if she has a different name from everyone else.
