Travelling London to St Ives via Dorset with a 6 month old - where should we stay in Dorset?

We want to break the journey up roughly 50:50 and do 'a bit of Dorset' too. We leave London on Day 1 via a quick squizz at Stonehenge and then on to 'Place X' for 3 nights and then on to St Ives, Cornwall. HELP!

How about Bridport or Dorchester - both lovely

Charmouth area would be great. Lots of recommendations on this recent thread.
