My daughter (10y) and I are planning a weekend in Winchester- does anyone have any recommendations for things to see and do? We've booked our accommodation already and have some ideas for places to eat.

I'm looking forward to visiting the cathedral and am thinking of doing one of the guided tours- would you recommend?

What else would you go and see? I love churches, history, art, nature and spending time outside. DD enjoys these things too plus looking in small independent shops/markets.

Any suggestions gratefully received. We are travelling by train so won't have a car with us.

Wander around Winnall Moors nature reserve - at its most gorgeous in the early morning and evening. Climb St Giles Hill and St Catherine's Hill for amazing views. Tour of Winchester College and walk through the Water Meadows to St Cross.
Breakfast at one of our independent cafes - Cafe Monde in The Square is lovely.

The science centre is excellent, there's a fabulous Planetarium - one of the largest in the UK. Their shows are of cinema standard quality and lead you through a range of immersive full-dome films. The regular live science shows are also an essential with loads of cool experiments. They have lots of extra events on over the holidays. The No. 64 bus running between Winchester and Alresford passes within 300 metres of the Science Centre (at the bottom of Morn Hill). The service is half hourly Monday to Saturday.
Winchester Discovery Centre is a Library, Theatre, Café, Gallery and Social Space. It offers many things, including family friendly live performances and theatre on Family Sundays; activities for children; and hosts a Gallery space for contemporary exhibitions.
You could easily spend a half day at Marvell Zoo, which is only 8 miles from town centre. You get 10% discount if you travel by the bus, which travels direct during school holidays. www.marwell.org.uk/zoo/plan/travel-and-directions There are daily talks and feedings.
Creative Crafts is a wonderful little independent craft shop www.creativecrafts.co.uk

I would recommend doing the tower tour at Winchester cathedral if there is one happening (and you’re not afraid of heights)
