We need to travel to London next Saturday (1 adult and 3 paying children) from Wiltshire - could be Trowbridge, Westbury, Chippenham, etc. - with a family railcard.
Really shocked that the fare is approx. £57 unless we travel r-e-a-l-l-y s-l-o-w-l-y (3.5 hours each way).
I know you can cut costs by doing the journey in two separate parts if you know where to split it - which I don't.
Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

can you get a cab for £50.00??

foxinsocks · 26/05/2007 18:38

do you want a return?

I just typed in trowbridge to london and got £41.75 for 1 adult, 3 kids on the train at 10.43 (1 change).

have you got a family railcard?

FlossALump · 26/05/2007 18:39

do you know when you plan to return? You can get a single fare for £11.00 odd, for the 4 of you.

janeite · 26/05/2007 18:44

Family railcards are fab - we save loads every year. Think they cost about £20. Are you looking on Trainline? Sometimes you can get it cheaper by looking at the Railway company's own site.

FlossALump · 26/05/2007 18:45

not sure if this link will work butreturning the next evening

Leoness · 26/05/2007 18:56

single fares each way can cost less.

Obviously the earlier you book the cheaper it is.

We found recently it was cheaper when I phone the rail company directly than buying online!!

lazycat · 26/05/2007 19:00

i recently spent a whole afternoon just trying to find a ticket that was reasonably priced... then gave up and drove.

TooTicky · 26/05/2007 19:06

Yes, we do want to return.
FlossALump, where did you find the £11 single?

got a 16 pound return, don't know if the link works, but for outward journey times around 9 am, return journey around 6pm on the sunday. For 3 children and one adult. To get the cheapest fares you need to specify journey times. HTH!

FlossALump · 26/05/2007 19:09

and that was on the trainline sorry!!

TooTicky · 26/05/2007 19:12

No, I couldn't get the link to work. I'll have a look at the Trainline.

TooTicky · 26/05/2007 19:23

OP posts:
TooTicky · 26/05/2007 19:23

...and that's from Chippenham which is the shortest journey...

OP posts:
FlossALump · 26/05/2007 19:31

the one I got was from westbury.

TooTicky · 26/05/2007 20:52

Oh blast it, the £25.25 was a single fare
