Road Trip - Is Halifax worth a stop?

We're making a well-worn journey south this summer, and I'm trying to plan some stops. Images of the Piece Hall in Halifax are all over my twitter feed at the moment for some reason, and I wondered if the town was worth a visit?

If you are to go to Halifax at least go to where they make quality streets, after eights and if you have kids go to the eureka museum'

NashvilleQueen · 05/07/2018 16:23

Eureka is excellent for little children

I lived there 20 years ago so my knowledge of the place isn't tip top. However, an old school friend emailed me a link to this article recently. Sounds like the place has caught cool.

Hebden Bridge, just down the road, is lovely. And if you have children, try Shibden Park - it has a small boating lake and miniature railway.

The Piece Hall is fabulous if you just wanted somewhere to stop for a bit. Eureka museum is great for little kids - you'd need to allow a good chunk of a day to see it all. Other than that though there are lots of nice restaurants and bars, and the theatre but I can't think of any other tourist attractions. It's a nice little town (I live 10 min drive out) but not a weekend destination or anything.

I may have seen that article Zampa, maybe that’s why I’ve got caught in this Piece Hall fever! Thanks for these, very helpful.

Hebden bridge and the surrounding countryside is lovely, hardcastle crags is really beautiful. Shibden hall is worth a short visit - I think that there is a new tv drama (Gentleman Jack?) being filmed about its famous owner Anne Lister. The park is nice for a wander too.

Piece Hall is nice and Eureka is good for young kids. The rest of the town? Meh.

Surrounding countryside is OK. Lots of fires at the mo though! I cycled through one yesterday.

Hoppinggreen · 10/07/2018 12:03

I grew up there and most of my family are still there
There are grotty bits but The Piece Hall has just had a multi million pound revamp and is lovely ( if a bit empty)
If you need to break your journey it’s ok but I wouldn’t make a special visit to Halifax

Ooh. My husband works at the sweetie factory ☺️
Town itself is a bit run down, but the countryside is lovely around. Nice areas to visit all around, and piece hall is pretty.

flamingofridays · 10/07/2018 12:21

No! But then I live here so..

Eureka is good for kids. Countryside is nice in good weather. Piece hall very "cool" at the moment.

LittleMissCwtch · 10/07/2018 12:26

I’ve recently moved from Halifax and the Piece Hall is very pretty but you wouldn’t spend more than a few hours there tops.

The town centre is very average, Eureka is good but you are best getting there early.

I agree about Hebden Bridge that’s worth a visit, beautiful place!
