Parking in York

How easy is it to park in York? Visiting my sister overnight on a Friday night. Was planning on driving there, arriving around midday and leaving the following morning.

From what I can see, the car parks cost a fortune and the park and rides don't allow overnight parking, and the hotels that offer parking spaces are extortionate.

Any chance of finding on street/cheap parking? Or should I give up and get a train?

Train might be easier!

We had a weekend in York for a recent Bank Holiday. We stayed at the Premier Inn in York Business Park which is just off the ring road to the north of the City. We left our car in the hotel car park and walked to the Park and Ride which is only about a mile away. There did seem to be plenty of spaces there and quite a few people street parking in that area.

When I said "There did seem to be plenty of spaces there and quite a few people street parking in that area" I meant at the Premier In and in the business park itself. As you rightly point out the Park and Ride does not allow overnight parking.

Having said that - it might just be that they shut the gates at 8pm. You might be OK to park there and leave it until the next morning

Quick search on parkopedia found 24 hours near the town centre for £12

They do lock the park and ride gates as a friend found out to her cost. Parking in York is extortionate. Does your friend have a spare parking permit?

Your sister could get you a visitor's parking permit:

Whereabouts does she live? There are pockets of free parking close to the centre of York but they are few and far between. The further out you get the more likely you will be to get free parking. I suspect that the P&R gates will just close overnight and re-open in the morning. I don't know if they will penalise you, they didn't when we parked for 2 nights in Bath P&R.

Actually just googled it and you can be fined for staying at the P&R overnight, as Vanilla Sugar said

We used this last year. £2 after 6 and Free overnight just make sure you put in enough to cover what time you will be picking your car up. It will tell you on the screen.

Thanks all for all your help! We're slightly out of the centre so I think we'll have a look for some residential parking (maybe on google street view first?), but if no luck then Monk Bar sounds like the cheapest option!
