going home to canada in Sept. I know London really well but what must I see before I go home. Any hidden gems? Going to be in Scotland in June so any ideas for there as well and driving up to scotland so lots of time for side trips?

OK, somewhere to visit between London and Scotland......

Any criteria????!!!! Is it just between London and Scotland or would you do Wales too?

chatee · 20/05/2007 21:44

lake district??

compo · 20/05/2007 21:44

if you're driving up to Scotland I would definitely make a trip to the Lake District on the way

compo · 20/05/2007 21:47

also castles if there aren't many in Canada

Lake District is gorgeous. My hidden gem there is Elterwater (tiny place that you'll need a good map for). Fabulous pub called The Britannia where you can stop for afternoon tea. The Langdale valley just further on is stunning and there's another pub at the end called the Old Dungeon Ghyll (though that's more of a walker's pub)
None of these I particularly think children would enjoy.... but definitely hidden gems.

Warwick Castle is cool! Bath? Lots of nice seaside towns.. My mind has gone blank!! I'm Canadian too

purpleduck · 20/05/2007 22:17

York and Chester are nice - lol at the castles in Canada!! I don't think there are any!! (lots of moose though!) What kinds of things are you into? Historical stuff?? Quaint village-y places? Maybe the Cotswolds? Stonehenge? The village Of Laycock in Wiltshire is all medieval...

Suggest travelling up one side of the country (via Chester/Lake District). Over to Edinburgh, then back via the Northumberland coast (Holy Island, Bamburgh, Alnwick)and Durham and York on the way back. Beamish (near Durham)is a great "how we used to live" museum. Think the Castle Museum at York is similar but haven't been there since I was at school.

Think you should do the British seaside thing and go to somewhere like Weymouth for fish and chips and candyfloss You could visit Durlde Door while you were in the area.

There are no castles in canada (well, toronto has one that some guy with too much money shipped stones from scotland (I think it was) and rebuilt a castle over there. Should I do wales?

dh and I have planned on lake district and will definately check out elterwater. WE plan to drive up to haworth because I want to see the bronte museum then work our way up to edinburgh. We plan to travel more over the summer too, so the cotswolds are on the list and devon/cornwall area. dh say stonehenge as a teenager and thought they were just a bunch of rocks.

I like the idea of driving up one side and northumberland coast.

Thanks, this is great. God, I don't want to go home now! I was looking forward to it but finding it tougher as it draws nearer.
