B&B/overnight stay - half-way between London and Penzance? Suggestions.

Driving down to Penzance in a few months - but fancy making a bit of an adventure of it and stopping off for a night on the way and the way back. Need somewhere for DH, DS and I - B&B, farm-stay, whatever. Just somewhere that would be a nice break for the afternoon/night. Not even sure of the easiest route - so can anyone advise as to whereabouts we should be thinking of stopping/where to stay?

How about breaking the journey just west of Exeter on Dartmoor. For example this looks OK and is on FarmstayUK

we do that drive a fair bit - which part of London are you going from?

We normally stay somewhere around Exeter.

We usually go M3, swap to the M4 at Bracknell, M5 then A30.

Some people go M3, A303 then the A30 but if you are going in holiday time, you may find the single lane stretches of the A303 will do your head in with caravans, lorries and tractors BUT listen to the traffic before you go and see if there are any major screw-ups on either route.

In holiday time, the last bit, through Devon and Cornwall is often slow because of traffic, roadworks, accidents.

Thanks - West London, btw. Figured Exeter about right.
