Stingy holiday cottages

Seven of us in a holiday house, not cheap. Between us we have been supplied with two small bath towels and five hand towels. What is the point of such petty penny pinching? They could have just said they didn’t supply towels and we would have brought our own (actually we would have gone elsewhere because it would have rung alarm bells). Obviously there are also no large glasses, no bin bags and the dish sponge is about 30 years old as well. Is it so hard to get these things right?

Yes, it is. i caught hell from a place in oxford ten years ago for using, washing and replacing several towels/

I agree, we've stayed in a lot of holiday cottages usually as a group of 7 and they range from not providing anything to providing lovely extras like fresh bread, eggs, milk, cake, wine, chocolates etc. My particular bugbear is when they give you one toilet roll for a week between 7 (or 8 is usually full occupancy). Or a dishwasher but no dishwasher tablets.

I wouldn't expect a holiday cottage to provide 'consumables' such as loo roll or dishwasher tabs, but I would certainly expect a bath towel per person staying plus hand towels for each bathroom. Rubbish crockery always cheeses me off too.

Would not expect consumables other than a loo roll in each toilet, or towels either - it is self catering, not a hotel or b and b. At least most places nowadays provide bedding! (I remember sitting on the duvets/pillows going away in the car when young)

I have a holiday house i let out. We supply a bath towel and a smaller towel for each guest plus face clothes. We put in a new sponge and wash cloth in the kitchen for each new batch of guests and supply washing up liquid and a few dishwasher tabs plus wash tabs for the washing machine. There is toilet roll in each bathroom. If you need more you need to buy it I guess. We don't leave shampoo etc but that has never been an issue. I have it stocked how I would like to have a guest house stocked. There are loads of plates and glasses etc. They aren't expensive and are easy to replace. It isn't hard to get it right.

I don’t mind getting a toilet roll in each bathroom to start and just a couple of dishwasher tablets. I do like decent crockery, this place looks like it’s been stocked from jumble sales. Plain white crockery from Tesco would be much nicer than the selection of chipped mugs and plates we have here. I can’t bear chipped cups. Flimsy cutlery too.

My bugbears are places that are for 4 pepole, so have 4 knives, 4 forks, 4 plates etc.

Also only tiny glasses; no matching crockery - and I'm not talking green and blue I mean 2 pasta bowls and 2 tiny ramekins; chipped stuff; only wooden non-dishwasher proof chopping boards that are a health hazard; someone else's left over food - salt/sugar/oil = ok, crisps and cereal = not ok. And no bloody oven gloves.

I so agree about places that only have four of everything (plates etc), especially if there is a dishwasher. You end up washing up by hand in order to have crockery for the next meal as there is no danger of filling the dishwasher enough for a load. And woe betide you if you stir the cooking pasta with one of the four forks or want a spoon for soup and then pudding!

If you pick places that have been independently inspected by Visit England then they have minimum standards. if its something off airbnb then you have no idea what you are getting!
