Nice places to stay in Dorset

We are thinking of renting a cottage for a week in June, somewhere in Dorset. We've got no idea where to go - can anyone recommend a nice area? There will be 2 adults and a 2-year-old and we will have a car. Thanks x

It is a bit weird but it makes it easier to compare cottages if they're all on one website! I'm now a bit tempted by Lulworth Cove (I'm soooo indecisive!) but can't seem to find any cottages.

The only thing about Lulworth, lovely though it is, is that there's no sand IIRC. There's not much at Charmouth either unless the tide's right out I think, but at least you can get to Lyme easily. If you want sand you might be better off looking at some of the other places recommended, maybe.

Plenty of sand on Weymouth beach

A sandy beach would be nice but isn't the be all and end all as we'll have the car. As long as there are a few shops and places to eat within walking distance I'll be happy! Having said that, we'd rather be in a small, quiet place than a bigger town. Lulworth looks stunning but there seems to be a real lack of cottages.

We used Dorset Coastal Cottages - they are brilliant and very helpful too. The cottages are also lovely They have quite a few around the Lulworth area.

QueenofBleach · 09/05/2007 08:28

Try lulworth.com, my mother does cottages in the cove and she might have some space also Cromwell house Hotel brought a friends B&B and are doing self catering from it, called Rose Cottage, also another B&B is being used as self catering caleed Breach House, try Winfrith Newburgh as they have some self catering and is just inland. ever thought of a static caravan, Durdle Dorr may have some free,

monkeymonkeymoomoo · 09/05/2007 08:31

We are staying in Winfrith Newburgh this September - oonly 3 miles from the sea. Booked with Dorset Coastal Cottages see here

I've heard bad things about Breach House, but maybe others have had good experiences.

QueenofBleach · 09/05/2007 08:45

Breach House has now changed hands this year, got sold last year and was also a B&B not self ctaering which I think it is now.. Also Ivy cottage and I have the number

Hooray, I have now booked a lovely cottage in Charmouth,a s it seems to have everything we need and is reasonably priced. Thanks everyone for the advice, and especially Tamum for recommending Lyme Bay Holidays.

All we need now is for the weather to improve...

i have been to charmouth with lyme bay holidays - very much enjoyed it. i think charmouth is quite charming - enough infrastructure to be convenient but not over developed and tacky.

Well, I've just made a late booking for one of the driftwood apartments in West Bay for mid June. It looks fab and we're really looking forward to sampling the seafood restaurants (albeit at lunch times with a 4 mth old baby in tow)and what's best, it's 100m from the beach - perfect for our 3 yr old - let's hope that it doesn't rain too much that week.

Lilymaid · 14/05/2007 17:11

If you go to the famous seafood restaurant in West Bay you need to book well in advance! It is good - and so apparently is the pub.

littlestar · 17/05/2007 13:51

Ooh pammo, the apartments look lovely! I wish I'd known about them earlier (I'm so indecisive!)

Thanks to Tamum for recommending www.lymebayholidays.co.uk/ since that is where I found it - in the Cancellation Bargains Page!

Tamum · 17/05/2007 18:35

If only I was on commission...

Have a lovely time all of you
