Wanting to visit Harris, Outer Hebrides, ferry or fly?

Hi, we are at a wedding near Oban in August this year. We have 3 children under 6 years old and a camper van.
I booked flights from Glasgow to Stornoway but am now thinking that we should get the ferry instead (as somebody told me you need a car for Harris).
Now I am totally confused and fed up looking. Should I get the ferry instead? (if so from where?). Will it be too much driving?
Arrrhhhh, wish we were just going to Cornwall instead Grin

You'll need a car for getting around in Lewis, so we're you planning to hire one when you fly? Ferry is from Ullapool - I think it's about 3 hours, but might be a little quicker now - it's a few years since I have been. Personally I think the west coast of Lewis is the most beautiful.

Harris/Lewis is beautiful but you will need a car. Never tried the ferry but cars are available to hire from the airport

Oban is not on Lewis/Harris?? You can fly Glasgow-stornoway (lewis) or ferry Ullapool-stornoway (around 3h) or go through Skye and get uig-tarbert (Harris) ferry

I've hired a car from stornaway before as the ferries wernt carrying cars for a while, wasn't expensive and worked out fine. You do need a car.
Top tip, make plans for food on Sundays. Everything is shut. We were greatful our b&b served breakfast as some don't, the Sabbath is taken very seriously

No airport on Harris. Drive from stornoway to tarbert approx 1.5h?
