Going to London Friday to Monday in May and return tickets are looking at around £286 for two. Does anyone know if I have any chance of getting them cheaper?

That's the standard fare. You need to wait until they release the advance tickets.

derektheladyhamster · 11/01/2018 19:28

Can you fly? It was much cheaper for us to go from stansted

Notthisnotthat · 11/01/2018 19:29

I think they go on sale about 12 weeks in advance.

pluginbaby00 · 11/01/2018 19:29

Advance tickets only available up to 3rd may right now. Visit here https://www.virgintrains.co.uk/tickets/your-ticket/ways-to-save

I used to do Glasgow to Birmingham a lot and rarely paid more than £20 each way. Depends on your times but will be nowhere near what you are quoting.

AutumnGlitterBall · 11/01/2018 19:33

I’ve always found the east coast line from Edinburgh to King’s Cross a lot cheaper than the west coast to Euston, even allowing for the fare getting to Edinburgh. The advance tickets come out about six months before travel. Single tickets each way will probably come in cheaper than a return as well.

AutumnGlitterBall · 11/01/2018 19:35

Sorry, I think the timetable comes out six months in advance but the tickets are twelve weeks, as another poster says.

Fekko · 11/01/2018 19:44

Changing times? Have you a family and friend travel card?

Matilda2013 · 11/01/2018 19:48

I was told they get cheaper about 12 weeks before so keeping an eye out for that. Went on the virgin website direct and they’re at £566ish for two returns so don’t know why that’s more expensive than the trainline either. I am trying to look at flights too but whether the difference between flight prices and trains is worth it and then trying to get from the airports into the city.

It depends on your destinations. Are these first class? Last ones I booked were around the £90mark and flights slightly cheaper.

Standard train seats are tidgy these days though.

Matilda2013 · 11/01/2018 19:57

Standard seats Glasgow central to London Euston. Not too fussy about times on the Friday going or Monday coming back.. maybe give it a few weeks and see if the tickets come down in price!

Tickets for a play and hotel booked so just the last thing to fix!

I usually book on redspottedhankey.com. A family and friends card costs about £30 ( healer if you hunt around for a code) and worth it for the discount.

Royalcoronation · 11/01/2018 20:08

Buy singles. You can usually get good deals on advance tix.

Royalcoronation · 11/01/2018 20:10

Also book with the Operator. So Virgin trains.

Red spotted hanky and the like charge a booking fee and can't offer fares any cheaper than virgin.

Matilda2013 · 11/01/2018 20:13

Maybe I’m confused but at the moment direct with virgin is costing me £283 one way when I can get returns for that price on the trainline? Am I doing something wrong?

OP posts:
Royalcoronation · 11/01/2018 20:22

The Virgin prices will change when the tickets are available

Petalflowers · 11/01/2018 20:26

My dh often flies from Gatwick to Glasgow on Easyjet, and generally pays about £70. I would consider flying.

pluginbaby00 · 11/01/2018 20:30

Matilda. Did you read my posts. Use the link. They've not released the advance tickets yet! It's not always 12/24 weeks for various reasons

Matilda2013 · 11/01/2018 20:34

Okay thanks @pluginbaby00 will keep an eye on this Smile

Royalcoronation · 11/01/2018 20:37

If you do consider flying remember the cost of the flight is only part of your transport. You also have to get to and from the airports. Both time and cost wise o find flights to work out more than cheap trains tix

Matilda2013 · 11/01/2018 20:40

The airports worry me as I’ve never been before so transport isn’t something I’m familiar with.

Branleuse · 11/01/2018 20:45

its only worth doing by train if you book way in advance, or if you just really love the train. I actually love that particular train journey, but youll be much more likely to get a cheap flight

AgentProvocateur · 11/01/2018 20:59

You can get them for £30 each way if you hold out. And if you get a Two Together railcard, you can save 1/3 (would obviously need to do more than one trip to be worth it)

MerryInthechelseahotel · 11/01/2018 21:21

Overnight bus too is an option. Very cheap but you probably wouldn't want that! Not sure about daytime buses. Sorry I know you asked for trains Wink

Matilda2013 · 26/01/2018 19:08

Train from Euston to Glasgow booked for £30pp Grin so happy but forgot to use my health service discount to bring it to £24pp so need to remember that for the journey down
