Recommendations for a uk summer beach holiday 2018 with a 10 yr old.

We really like Southwold, Holt and Wells next to the Sea but we want a change. We need to go in the school holidays (August) and we would like somewhere child friendly for our 10 year old. Any suggestions please?

Swanage? Lots to do for children in the local area. The beach isn't huge though.

Or Bournemouth. You have the aquarium which my dd's really enjoyed.

If you like those villages/towns then most of the Cornish villages/towns will suit - places like St Ives, Padstow and Rock. Salcombe, small and busy , has a Southwold vibe. All have surf school, sailing lessons etc for kids.

Whitstable is nice (but has a stony beach although there are sandy beaches further along the coast) and plenty to do on the Kent coast further afield.

Northumberland. Beautiful beaches and quite a lot of different things to do.

The Gower, Wales. Simply stunning beaches with loads of boogie boarding opportunities as well has huge sand dunes to play on/boogie board down. So much fun.

Port Eynon and Rosilli (so?) are our faves.

Mrs Patmore.....can you recommend any cottages / houses in Salcombe to stay in? I have often thought about Salcombe but have never made it there!

Tenby

We think we've narrowed the search down to Salcombe and Tenby. As we've never been to either before, can anyone recommend where to stay in these towns please? We would rather do this than having to drive into the town each time. Thanks.

I was coming on here to say that we enjoy Holt/Southwold area and absolutely recommend Beadnell Beach in Northumberland for another year. Fantastic stretch of golden sand and terrific sand dunes - perfect for 10/11 yr old boys! You can get boats out from the harbour to the Farne islands to see the puffins. And inland is an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - loads to do and see - Alnwick Castle for example. And while you are in that area, you can visit Hadrian's wall and visit all the Roman ruins etc. The countryside around there is breathtaking.

For Tenby I would use FBM Holidays. We've used them a few times. There are lots of places within Tenby town or within walking distance. Website is user-friendly and the staff are great and very helpful. It's based in Tenby so their knowledge is top notch and the office is right there if you have any issues during your stay.

Salcombe is lovely. We tend to hire self catering at Soar Mill Cove hotel but that's outside of town. There's plenty of places. There's a lovely beachfront house in East Portlemouth we've used a couple of times - just a ferry ride across the estuary to town with ferries ever half hour. Beach on that side is lovely although South Sands is our favourite beach - again a sea tractor and ferry ride into town but no car necessary.

We are just come back from Salcombe and it is fab, and will return, but there isn't a beach in the actual town.
Portmouth beach: You do have to get a little ferry (£1.60 each way) and it's a 2 minute journey. So that adds to the fun! When we used the ferry it was going backwards and forwards constantly, so there was no waiting around.
North Sands: is about a 15 walk from the town with a nice cafe right there.
South Sands: a ferry ride away, and then a sea tractor. It's quite an experience! There is only a hotel there, which is lovely for lunch but quite pricey.

We had several holidays in the South Hams area when our DC were about that age, staying in Dartmouth. Same self-catering apartment each time, with fabulous views across Dartmouth and the estuary. An easy walk into Dartmouth, beaches a short drive away and Salcome not too far off.
