'Nice' (!) pubs / bars / restaurants in Stratford-Upon-Avon

DH and I are spending this weekend sans kids in Stratford () and I was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations for places to drop into for a drink and / or bite to eat.
We will arrive mid-morning on Saturday and I just plan on spending the day wandering around (haven't been there in about 12 years), and being spontaneous - if we see a bar we like, we will go in there: No thinking about whether it's child-friendly, smokey, time for naps / food / bed. However if anyone has a real fave they'd like to recommend I'd appreciate it (oh, and I don't want to have to book anywhere for dinner - just want to see someone and 'pop in'!)
thanks.

WaynettanEasterEgg · 22/03/2007 09:21

No - planning on being very un-cultured!!! When I moved to the UK first I lived near Stratford, so am planning on boring DH to deaath by showing him all the places I used to live, the pubs I used to go to etc etc - basically getting revenge for the last 10 years!!!!

If the weather is good its nice to sit in the park, and get something to eat off the baguette barge!
The Thatch tavern is really nice, proper old thatched building.

thinking

Nip · 22/03/2007 13:37

forgot to say that the thatch does really good food too.

zippitippitoes · 22/03/2007 13:39

I don't think there is much to do in stratford apart from go to the theatre!

there is a butterfly farm

Nip · 22/03/2007 13:41

waynetta there is a lovely walm you can do down the river too, in a huge circle - its not to long and you can always hop on a boat half way to get back - or get on the ferry and walk down the other embankment.

Nip · 22/03/2007 13:41

*walk not walm

WaynettanEasterEgg · 22/03/2007 13:42

Hmmm Nip - I like the sound of that. My, imagine being able to 'jump' on a ferry and not worry about whether DS1 will try and throw himself off the side!!!!

I only live a short distance from there, and we often go into stratford on a nice day for a nice walk, nice food and a few beers!

Hope you have a nice time

llareggub · 22/03/2007 13:46

I particularly like the carrot cake in the Cox Yard cafe. If you fancy it walk through the shops, down to the canal and go over the bridge where you'll see the cafe. I like to sit there and watch the world go by.

Have to say I'm not fond of pubs in Stratford, but then I don't go in them much these days as I've always got buggy in tow.

llareggub · 22/03/2007 13:47

Nip - I live close too.

Nip · 22/03/2007 13:47

Oh sorry about this, but the Thai boathouse is nice too! (All of a sudden i am remembering pre-baby places to go!)

Nip · 22/03/2007 13:47

Sorry for the hijack - where abouts llareggub?

Nip · 22/03/2007 13:50

llareggub - OH you live VERY close....if your nr hatton

llareggub · 22/03/2007 13:53

llareggub · 22/03/2007 13:54
