Would staying at Marine Point, Wallasey be all right for a Liverpool weekend?

Trying to find affordable accommodation for a weekend exploring family history in Liverpool - not easy! However the Travelodge at Wallasey is a lot cheaper than the city centre ones. Quite like the sound of staying in a big centre with entertainment too as we will have teenage ds. Would it be a pain getting over the Mersey? Is it a bit bleak and a place we'd only want to sleep or would it be fun?

Yes it would be a pain the travelodge in Aigburth would be much better.

That's South Liverpool btw about twenty minutes on a bus from the centre of Liverpool.

It's certainly doable.
There are buses and a train that go from there direct into Liverpool city centre. Bus stop is pretty much outside the hotel and the train station is 5 mins walk away. Could even walk 2 mile along the prom and get the ferry, I would recommend this on a nice day!
It's not a bleak place at all, cinema, restaurants, great ice cream, bars.

Long time Wirral resident here, and personally I wouldn't. There is nothing wrong with New Brighton per se but whilst the accommodation might be cheaper you would have the additional cost of getting to Liverpool and.back. If driving the tunnel is £1.70 each way, then there would be the cost of parking to factor in. If leaving a car in New Brighton you could probably find somewhere to park for free, but the return fare on a bus is roundabout £4.70. There is a train too and I'm assuming the fare would be about the same.
Personally for the extra I'd stay in Liverpool - definitely a more interesting place to stay than New Brighton if you've got children. That said there is a cinema in New Brighton which charges cheaper prices than the one in Liverpool

thanks, i'll take a look at the Aigburth one, that sounds significantly easier.

I can see that it's not super cheap to travel to the centre of Liverpool but we're talking something like £100 difference in the accommodation over the weekend so it might still be worth it.
