Edinburgh - best places to eat?

Where's best for a pre-theatre supper in Edinburgh? After exceptional food if possible.

We're staying at the Balmoral but I think DH would rather leave the hotel to eat (unless it's so good not to be missed?).

The Witchery has special memories for us but we've not been there for a long time and reading Tripadvisor I wonder if the food is a bit 'meh'?

Recommendations gratefully received!

Harvey Nichols is very nice, Cafe St Honore is a small traditional French restaurant that is very reliable, Michael Neave Whisky Bar and Reastarant is just off the Royal Mile and is good, Dine, above the Traverse theatre is excellent and I also like Angels with Bagpipes.

The restaurant is very good at the Balmoral but you could look at Twenty Princes Street.

Amarone is good, not exceptional but they do have a very good wine list.

Recently ate at 20 princes st was lovely nice bar and good food if you like steak.

We also had afternoon tea in the library on the royal mile which was really beautiful food and an unusual surrounding

Angels With Bagpipes seconded - beautiful food. Enjoy Edinburgh, I used to live nearby and I miss it!

Love this place if you like curry Mother India

It's like tapas but Indian. Best curries I've ever had.

museumum · 22/04/2017 20:32

Which theatre?
I'd recommend angels with bagpipes or Ondine the dogs is very good too mother India is great - Indian tapas-style. The Bon vivant is good too.

Thanks everyone, some lovely suggestions. Sitting down to check them all out now.

We're going to King's Theatre.

And does anyone know the Chaophraya restaurant? DH loves Thai so I should probably think about going there.

HamletsSister · 24/04/2017 18:52

Ate there last week - superb! But make sure you book. The entrance is 3 floors up and it feels like you are visiting someone's office but the restaurant is gorgeous and I loved the food.

Book a table with a view.

Thanks Hamlets, will do.

Very excited. I ❤️ Edinburgh!

Ondine is very nice - lung menu is very reasonable.

If you dont mind heading out of the city, First Coast on Daley road is lovely. Neighbourhood feel, seasonal food, funky tunes, friendly service, great Prosecco!
