Finally booked Alton Towers but need somewhere to stay a night either side. Suggestions please, el cheapo.

Thanks to the wonderful mn, we have won a night in a fancy hotel on site with tickets to AT and the water park. No way can we afford another night there, but need accommodation nearby as we're travelling from Kent and don't want to be knackered before we start.

Does anyone know of a travelodge or similar, or decent affordable B&B within easy driving distance, so we can make a mini holiday of it?

We have stayed there several times and it is very comfortable, clean and modern - there are two family rooms. The one we stayed in was on two levels - parent's bit downstairs with kid's bit up a staircase internal to the room. All mod cons including a little fridge and an excellent breakfast. It is also cheap and quite near Alton Towers, in a beautiful area.

Ok how about Yoxall cottage b&b in Alton village.

Family room, double and bunks, another bed avaliable on request and breakfast.

Adults £20.00
Children £12.50

Also tea/coffe, tv, and en-suite.

There are five of us, but could probably fit into a family room. Not got a budget as such, but I guess we could afford £150 or so.

That looks lovely lilymaid, but no discount for children, so probably a bit too much.

Just looked it up online CB and it looks great. Just what we need I think, and the price is very reasonable.

Phone Mr Hambleton Plumb (very down to earth guy - added his wife's family's name when they took over the ancestral farm!) He used to charge £1 for every year of a child's age which was very reasonable!

we stayed here when we went to ALton towers. It is walkable (for grown ups!) about 3/4 mile, and the owners were really friendly. Useful licened bar onsite which means kids can be put to bed and you can chill in the 'pub' with a drink, but be 20m from the kids. We went sans kids, but I would recommend as B&B's go.

The nearest B&B is Ivy Trough House which is right at the main gate. If you're in the hotel the next night though you probably won't need to be that close. Look for B&B's in Alton, Oakamoor, Leek and Cheadle. Ashbourne and Bakewell are lovely but further North than you need.

There's a Holiday Inn just off J15 M6 which is maybe 30 mins drive.

The B&Bs lilymaid & crunchie recommend look great.

Thanks everyone - I didn't have a chance today to look into this further, so am glad of a few other suggestions. I'm sure we'll fine somewhere lovely. We've decided to make a mini holiday out of it as dh is in need of some time off - not that Alton Towers avec tres enfants consitiutes a 'break', but should be good fun.

Couldn't get an answer at Heathy Roods, so have booked Yoxall Cottage. The owner sounds lovely, so we're looking forward to a nice short break in half-term! Thanks CB and all. (and MN, of course)
