Somewhere a bit quirky / special / not ££ in the south

Hit me. A so rare actually unique night off and away for me and DH. Anywhere between Cardiff, London (but not London prices), Birmingham and the south coast

We'd like pubs / the odd quirky shop but not "shopping"/ nice architecture/ places to wander. Possibly Clifton? Not bath. Been there done that. May be Cardiff but which area?

We don't need luxury but I'd like somewhere without laminate flooring and mouldy grout

Any one thinking "I know just the place?"

I'd not considered Winchester so will look more closely there

We've got friends in Brighton so visit often

I've been to Stratford upon Avon a couple of times but it didn't set me alight, perhaps I should Give it another go
