Pwllheli, Llyn penninsul

Looking at booking a cottage in this area for a week in July, two kids, 5&8. Just wondering if it is a good spot for a holiday. Are the beaches etc safe for swimming? Any recommendations for the area? Will be coming from the ferry @ Holyhead, so short enough drive we think.

My family lives down the coast at Morfa Nefyn. If you can stay there rather than Pwlleheli I would. The beaches are lovely and some owned by the National Trust, there's nice walks and pubs.

Pwllheli itself is a fairly work-a-day town, it has facilities, like supermarkets and chippys but some areas are a little run down. However we love to go fishing there.
However it is the main town for the whole of the Lyn peninsula, so you can expect to drop by during your stay.

Where exactly is your cottage? You only need to travel a couple of miles out of Pwllheli to be in the most gorgeous countyside.

The beaches of Porth Oer, Porth Iago and Aberdaron are all gorgeous.

It is also fairly close to Abersoch which is a bit more upmarket and has lots of bars/bistros and a decent beach.

Thank you, We have not booked anything yet, just found a nice cottage between pwlheliand Abeersoch, will look a little more around the areas suggested. Does it get very crowded?

Very crowded in the Summer. Pwllheli is great for Asda.

Well "Crowded" is a very relative term! Depends on where you are coming from and what you are used to.

There is usually some sort of (20min) hold up going through Pwllheli but we have always found the roads very good and quiet compared to say Cornwall or Devon.

Then again we are used to motorway commutes every day so anything seems quiet to us!

We stay at Sarn, that is also between Pwllheli and Abersoch, no offence to previous poster but the area is miles nicer than Morfa Nefyn

There is a big Haven site not far away with a great pool complex that the DC used to love and things like rope works and crazy golf.

Good to know about the haven pool..so you can go there is not a resident? We actually booked a cottage in Sarn Meylltyern in the end, was on special offer for the week we wanted though sterling made gains over the weekend so we lost some of the benefit
We are from Dublin, so well used to traffic....good to know about the Asda too.

Yes, the Haven site accepts day visitors, can't remember what the day rate is but not particularly cheap, we just use it once per holiday, if it is a rainy day get there early as the whole of the Llyn seems to make it's way there!

We usually stay at Cae Garw farm, it is so lovely and peaceful there, and Sarn is pretty much central to everywhere. Have a lovely time!

We go every easter and love it. Not at all crowded then. We stay around Aberdaron and Llanbedrog and love it so much we go back every year. Aberdaron is really sweet village and great for beach days as has pub, takeaway pizza and icecream right on beach but totally unspoilt and uncommercial. Love it!
