What UK holiday have you been on that's been great? Thinking of going to the New Forest or Lake District or anywhere nice, any advice?

We are not sure where to go yet but want to rent a holiday house somewhere picturesque. Two families travelling from Kent and Sussex, we want a max journey time of 3-4 hours each. The most important thing is somewhere where there is plenty for the kids to do, visitor attractions etc.

I love the west coast of Scotland but I don't think that would work out really . I live in Somerset and there are some really lovely places here. Cornwall is good too but tooooo busy which is why we've abandoned it this year . East Devon/Dorset ? We're actually going to the IOW this year - never been before but we found a really reasonable cottage which sounds ideal and from what friends have told us it will be less manic than Cornwall/Devon.

DS#1 wanted to go abroad but as we have no valid passport for anyone the expense and hassle of that for a start put me off completely. Perhaps the ferry to the IOW will count as 'going abroad'....
