Windsor without visiting the castle - what else is there?

The castle is very expensive and I'm with my limited mobility mum, disruptive ds 4 and angelic dd 6

What else is there to see/do?

We are going to Legoland next week and have booked an overnight stay. Looking for something to do with a 2 year old the following day... Any suggestions?

take the open top bus tour it's fun - your mum could sit downstairs.

River cruise.

Behind the high street is a nice play park that has water fountains kids can play in (if the weather would behave). In the old station area is lots of naice shops and places for tea. The river walk is lovely (though perhaps not so nice for limited mobility) and there is a very small amusement park for littlies and a pretty good crazy golf. There are boats for hire and river cruises. Lots ofswans and ducks. The Great Park is fab for walks/bikes/picnics, but again not so good for limited mobility.

Nearby (a drive) is Dorney Court which is nice for a trip, nice cafe and play area.

Feed the Ducks/swans (loads on the river).

There are loads of lovely parks - check out the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Council website for details. Alexandra park has a lovely fountain/water feature children can splash in (and lovely benches for your Mum). Also has a crazy golf.

The council swimming pool is brilliant. Really good leisure pool (very shallow at end for little ones) and there's a little cafe by the pool with seating area for non-swimmers. Also has an outdoor free play area.

Boat ride on the Thames.

Cross the bridge to Eton and wander round there

You can see the soldiers marching up to the castle & back down again. It is pretty impressive as the band will be playing. The soldiers leave barracks at 10.45 so I'd suggest being outside the castle then & again at about 11.05/11.10 to see them go back down.

Castle is well worth the money. It's fascinating.

Hi, fountains and park are in Bachelor's Acre behind Peascod St (alley nr Boots). The best play park in Windsor is the pirate park on Imperial Rd about a mile out of the town centre, huge pirate ship, sand, carpark, cafe, loos etc. Best cafe in Windsor is the (non-chain) Cinnamon Cafe in the Old Station, nice food at reasonable prices, it's where locals go. Dorney Court is not open every day, so check first if you want to go there. Saville Gardens, part of the Castle's Great Park, are a few miles away in Englefield Green and are mostly free (cost for parking), nice but little pirate playpark and loads of open space, lake etc.

The Long Walk in front of the castle is a nice picnic spot. Clean and children can play ball on the grass.

With the guard change, check the schedule online as they don't march every day. In the summer, it is Mon-Sat but not Sun.

Castle is amazing. I had the pleasure of staying there for a conference two years ago. It was really atmospheric and peaceful. Took the tour and it was really interesting.

Virginia park is a huge free park which has free roaming deer and good walking access. It's walks link to the castle, (the great walk) and you can get some photos, kids can let off steam. Take a picnic with some booze for your mum if she does your head in. 😂
