Which area of London for two friends catching up?

Myself and my oldest friend live on opposite sides of the world, and we are meeting in London for a long weekend in July. Though we may want to see some of the sights, our main priority is hanging out and catching up. We'd like to stay in an area with a nice selection of bars and restaurants. Could anybody make a suggestion? We are late 30's and pretty laid back. We like nice places, but not showy iykwim. I'm coming in on the eurostar, but i don't know yet which airport she's arriving at. It's our first ever holiday together so it would be nice to get it right!

Chelsea. Lots of lovely small hotels, and great places to eat and shop.
Very easy to get into central London from either on the tube or buses, though I tend to walk to Mayfair as it's only 3 miles away.

Will check out Chelsea too - thanks!
