Pls recommend gorgeous places in Derbyshire/Yorkshire

DH and I want to plan a trip (without DCs!!!!) in the UK. We are based in the S East and want to explore Bronte country and/or Peake District type places. Want to do some serious walking, see beautiful houses/castles and stay somewhere fabulous. It is a special holiday for us. Chatsworth obviously on the list, but can anyone recommend anywhere else to stay/eat/visit?? TIA.

Knaresborough is lovely.
The houses built into the cliff side along the river are beautiful, and you can hire a rowing boat along the river Nidd. The is a castle right at the top of the town with really pretty views and Mother Shipton's Cave which is, I believe, the oldest tourist attraction in the county.
If you haven't been already, York is also a must see place to visit, though I realise that you might not be looking for city walks.

If you visit Ilkley Moor try The Box Tree restaurant.

Loads to choose from in either area, but an idea of budget would help. I could recommend our favourite B&B of all time, but you may want a luxury hotel (more of those in Yorkshire than Peak District) such as Swinton Park.

Oooh where do I start!

Yorkshire - Fountains Abbey, walking around the Malham Tarn area in the Dales, Castle Howard, walking in the North York Moors (my favourite spots Rosedale, Hole of Horkum, Levisham Moor (sitting at the Folly looking down at the Steam Trains as they run up and down the line). A city day in York, visiting the Minster, going to the Bedern studios to watch the renovation work on the glass from the Minster Studios and perhaps visiting Treasurers House, The Railway Museum or York Museum etc.

As for places to eat, let us know when you have decided where and I will happily come back with any good, bad, indifferent experiences I may have had in those areas.

Bolton abbey is lovely

Well if you choose the Peak District then yes, Chatsworth is a must see and can easily occupy a day. Haddon Hall is also worth a visit.

Lots of fabulous walking in that area too.

This place Riverside Hotel in Ashford in the Water is supposed to be very good.

Thank you everyone for fabulous ideas. Sod's Law it will pour with rain so keen for there to be other stuff to visit/see - and to stay somewhere wonderful so we can just read papers in cosy luxury if needs be. Will now start trying to do some proper planning.

Monsal Head, Winnats Pass, Buxton Park. Gorgeous gorgeous part of the country.

I can recommend a lovely B and B near Buxton.

headinhands Yes all of those and can I add Lathkill Dale, White Edge, Stanage Edge, Dove Dale and the Roaches. Although the latter is more connoisseur Peak District and a bit further away from the main honeypots.

I like the sound of connoisseur Peak District...

stanage edge, Longshaw, curbar gap, Bakewell. feeling homesick just thinking about it - grew up on the southern edge of Sheffield . Now live in North Yorks - Helmsley, Hovingham, Castle Howard - little Betty's .

I echo Monsal Head. If it's sunny get a picnic and eat it beside the river in the valley then walk it off after. DH and I used to live in Sheffield and that was our favourite place.
Also Bolton Abbey, Lyme Park, Haddon Hall.

The Peacock at Rowsley is supposed to be good. Very near Chatsworth Park and where the film stars stay when filming at Chatsworth.

Castleton is a pretty little village in spectacular countryside (Winnats Pass is at the top of the village), great walking and you can visit the Blue John Caverns (Treak Cliff, Speedwell and Peak Cavern aka 'The Devil's Arse).

Kedleston Hall near Derby is a lovely place to visit, also Haddon Hall which is near Chatsworth. Bolsover Castle is interesting, it's just across the M1 from the twoHardwick Halls, which are also worth a visit.

Tissington Village is very nice and the Hall is open for visiting at certain times. There is a monument into the churchyard from a crew member on the Titanic.

The Tissington Trail is a walking/cycling trail which was made from the disused railways that served the mines and mills, and you can hire cycles from several places, or walk the trails, stopping off at villages and tea shops.

Have you chosen yet? Thirsk is lovely. Rip on, Harrogate , york all very close. Light water valley is very good. Pickering/ grosmont steam trains.m

If you go this week it's the tour de Yorkshire going through thirsk on may 1 .

Thirsk has been 'yarnbombed' and it looks fabulous.
