If I like St Ives and Broadstairs where should we go?

We are hoping to get away for a week in May (before half term). Two families, self catering, need 4 bedrooms minimum. We want to be walking distance to a beach, and in a town/village with a choice of more than 1 pub and shop. We have 2 three year olds and 2 babies. My first suggestion St Ives was vetoed (too far) as was my second Broadstairs (too close). Any suggestions of somewhere similar to go? Or even fabulous houses to rent? We're in London to give a sense of distance.

Lyme Regis. Not too far bur far enough from London. Lovely shops, restaurants etc.

Thanks! I don't know Dorset at all. Is it a sandy beach?

I would like to visit Broadstairs- any recommendations?

Babymamamama · 12/02/2016 19:20

Tenby is gorgeous but quite a drive.

MrsPatterson2014 · 12/02/2016 19:24

It is half pebbles, half sand. Thanks sand side is man made - but I didn't realise at the time.

baby I though Tenby but couldn't find a house that worked. Is it nice?

Tenby is lovely but I'm biased as I used to live there.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 12/02/2016 20:08

Whitstable?

toots111 · 12/02/2016 20:11

Whitstable is in the same bucket as Broadstairs, too close! Basically anywhere we have already been on a day trip is ruled out :(

North Norfolk? Great place for a holiday, loads to do and lots of self catering places. Pubs are good too….

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 12/02/2016 20:12

Go to Tenby then.

huhpuh · 12/02/2016 20:14

Southwold or Aldebrugh?

Tenby is gorgeous. Georgian houses on the harbour. Even better beaches than st Ives. My fave three are Tenby, st Ives and broadstairs in that order. Why not check out on google images?

toots111 · 13/02/2016 11:43

Tenby looks lovely. It's definitely an option might be a bit too far still. If not this time, definitely in the future. Anywhere else in Dorset that might fit the bill?

Isle of Wight is beautiful, short ferry from Portsmouth.

St Ives is lovely though...my hometown!! You can fly to Newquay and hire a car to drive down the rest of the way? X

toots111 · 13/02/2016 12:22

Oh we used to go to the Isle of Wight as kids. Whereabouts would you recommend we base ourselves?

Update: we're going to Tenby! Really excited about it. Thanks for the suggestion, I would never have thought of it myself.

Ooh how exciting. We went few years ago when dd was a toddler and we really loved Manor wildlife park which is just up the road from Tenby. Not too big for little ones and lots of animals in much nicer outdoor setting than a normal zoo. Fab romantic ruined castles too. I thought the Pembrokeshire country side was gorgeous - so lush and green.

toots111 · 22/05/2016 10:55

We're in Tenby. It's gorgeous. The sun is out, the kids/dads are on the beach and I'm sitting in the sun looking at the amazing view from our house. Thanks for the recommendation!

Is it too early for wine? :)

If you hadn't have gone to Tenby, I would have suggested Swanage in Dorset. It's very like Broadstairs in many ways.

Strangely, St Ives and Broadstairs are my 2 favourite UK places to visit!
