DD is poking off to Cornwall on a post GCSE surf God ogling holiday. So me and DH have a week to ourselves in early July. Planing to hit Scotland.

1. we will be driving from the South East
2. we are used to long US road trips, so a few very long days won't be an issue
3. hope to visit at least one of the western islands for a blow on the beach
4. not bothered about the cities; have done them on city breaks in the past

Will research on TripAdvisor / google maps etc.

Any recommendations / Must do's / Must see's ? Thanks

Mull, Iona and Staffa. Calgary Bay on Mull is lovely, I used to live a stones throw away and miss it a lot.

i say this all the time.....watch the roads, what looks like a couple of hours drive may well take you the best part of the day. roads are narrow, impossible to overtake and generally very slow

Gigha is very very sweet, and a teeny ferry ride from the mainland

the penis shaped bit with Campbelltown at the end(spelling??) looks very pretty...we've only done the bit that leads to the Gigha Ferry

Applecross and Torridon are just gorgeous, the roads to get there are TERRIFYING!

Dh and I are hoping to do Route 500 at some point soon...that might be worth looking at?

Skye then ferry from Uig to Harris and Lewis. Beautiful white sand beaches.

Ditto TondelayaDellaVentamiglia's advice re the roads. In the north west of Scotland the A roads are narrow tracks with passing places.

Driving long distance in the UK is nothing like driving in the US. For a start the roads are much, much busier. They are also narrower, and if you get stuck behind a slow vehicle, especially one of the highland "A" roads your journey will take far longer than you anticipate.
