I wanted to know peoples opinions on single mothers living in council houses/flats. When ive asked around the first thing people mention is CHAV! I believe this is a huge stereotype and degrading, and certainly creates a self fulfilling prophecy. Im not saying u dont get your liars who scam the council into getting a free property and living of taxpayers, but is it really everyo mother in a council property, i mean u dont know their situation past history etc.

They all sit on sofas dumped outside drinking special brew too

I live in an area with a high proportion of single mums and several big council estates! The women are lovely caring and supportive that I know!

Can you clarify what it is your are asking. You say people think "CHAV" but then go on to mention people "scamming" for free houses. Are you equating people's interpretation of a chav to that of someone committing fraud to get a council property? Are they the same thing to you? Can you define what you mean by "chav"? Its not clear at all what you are asking.

That is not my interpretation of a chav, thats is the response i have been given by others.( yes they don't know the correct definition of a chav) And ive been 'asking around' because i am a sociology student.

Well the Oxford english dictionary defines "chav" as^ "a young lower-class person who displays brash and loutish behaviour and wears real or imitation designer clothes"^

But me personally i think its just a derogatory word used to describe a stereotype^ which people attach to single mothers in council homes. Which i totally DISAGREE with.

I actually haven't ever heard anyone use the word chav for years tbh, its not really a thing anymore is it? I dunno.
I only really remember hearing it when I was at school and it was just another word for "townies" which where just kids who wore tracksuits and nikes. It was townies and grungers then morphed into chavs and emos
