A week in Suffolk - where should we go?

Just the two of us (hums along), so no play parks, theme parks, crazy golf, bucket and spade beaches required!

We like walking, mooching, history, eating, drinking, photography.

Aldeburgh! Gorgeous little town by the sea, lots of scope for lovely picturesque walks, great places to eat and drink, friendly folk. Highly recommend it - we love it there

Framlingham castle and Landguard fort (Felixstowe) are two of my favourites. If you like walking there's a walk up from Felixstowe to Felixstowe ferry - a little foot bicycle ferry operates over the river Deben to the fishing village. There used to be a great fish and chip shop over there but I haven't been in a while so no guarantees. The ferry is seasonal so check before you go, but it's a nice walk.

The Suffolk Escape luxury log cabins private hot tubs on a lake humongous baths utter 5* in Hadleigh was there for a week in August

Oh forgot all arranged around a lake oodles of wildlife baby rabbits saw me in the nod whilst filling the kettle poor sods

Sunny Southwold!! Beautiful beach and pretty beach huts. Go to Adanams Wine shop - nice cafe at the back. Have a meal on the pier and have a look in the Under the Pier Show!!

Southwold is a great beach (better than Aldeburgh)
Ipswich is lovely, very historic. Try the free museum, Christchurch Mansion (not Monday). For local shopping, head to St Nicholas Street/St Peters St-full of boutique shops. Ipswich is the oldest continually settled town in the country so has plenty of heritage. Eat by the river for good bars and restaurants.
Orford Castle is good as well as Framlingham. Head over to nearby Wickham Market and Woodbridge for nice local market towns with good restaurants

Visit Shingle Street, it's a really isolated beach where you can find amber if you dig a bit-ask a dog walker for advice as the shingle moves. It's also good for local history.
Dunwich beach, again for history, home to a huge monastery complex that's now falling off the cliffs
Lavenham is gorgeous! Full of very old Medieval alms houses and guildhalls.
We like Kentwell Hall-check for seasonal activities-the gardens are beautiful and the hall is lovely.

Aldeburgh definitely and maybe take a stroll or cycle down to Thorpness where there's a quaint boating lake. Orford Ness is worth a visit if you like wild and remote and Snape Maltings is interesting for strolling, browsing and if you're a Benjamin Britten fan.

Sutton Ho for Anglo-Saxon history. It's a NT site.

Thanks all - I don't know why we've not been to Suffolk before, it sounds just our kind of place. Guilty - those cottages sound beautiful. Only problem is, we're camping! Maybe next time...

Recommend Lavenham, Sutton Hoo, somewhere on the coast - Aldburgh is lovely. Depends where you're based, but we spent a day in Cambridge which was beautiful.

I used to live in Ipswich so have a quite a dim view of it. They are currently rebuilding the two main town shopping centres so it's a bit of a building site.

Bury St Edmunds is lovely. Lots of little independent shops,restaurants and then there's the abbey gardens and lots of lovely parks also ickworth house is nearby.

Woodbridge is lovely good for a lazy mooch round and coffee.

Aldeburgh and south wold equally lovely.

If you don't mind a little drive colchester is 30 minutes drive from Ipswich and has a ton of history and shopping

OH and I went for a long weekend to Woodbridge - our last holiday before DD was born. We had a great time and visited Otley Hall, Aldeburgh, Flatford Mill, Dedham Vale, and Anglesey Abbey on the way home.

Vote bury St edmunds and ixworth (national trust), lavenham, minsmere and dunwhich. Plus area around woodbridge, Snape. Depends where you are based?

Some great pubs too. In addition to above, Tide Mill at Woodbridge, aliens in Rendlesham, migrants at Minsmer - we enjoy regular visits with friends in the area.

Chiristchurch Park and then the museum in Ipswich is lovely - town is not great atm, loads of building works, shops closing. The Ipswich Waterfront is lovely and the Orwell River Cruise is a must.

Close to Ipswich is the Suffolk Food Hall which is great for coffee/lunch/ fancy picnic food followed by a long walk.

Aldeburgh in the summer is over rated IMO but will be quieter now - head up to the Shell sculpture and then onto Thorpeness

If you like long coastal walks Dunwich is nice, heathland and windy pebble beach

Orford Ness is something else.
