Recommendations for UK city break please

We are thinking of having a few days away in the UK over New Year. We have 3 dc aged 14, 12 and 8 so looking for some recommendations with plenty to do for those ages.

We have been to Bristol, Bath and York in recent years and really enjoyed all of them.

London (expensive but lots to see)
Newcastle upon Tyne (less expensive but still lots to do for this age group).

Would love to see Glasgow and Edinburgh but just too far for a short break. Any other suggestions a bit closer to home?

Manchester? You could go to the Legoland discovery centre for one of the days.

The Legoland Discovery Centre is not worth the trip!

Liverpool has tons of free museums & galleries. Got a multiplex and and arthouse cinema too.

Newcastle, loads to do, and you can pop into Durham for a few hours, it's beautiful.

Cardiff. 2 hours from you according to the recent adverts on the tubes. Lots to do.

And I know it's not a city but the train from London goes all the way to St Ives which is just amazing. There's easily enough to fill a weekend in StIves

I've had great weekends out in Portsmouth too. Spinnaker tower, great outlet centre, lovely seaside, various young children things.

Brighton obviously! I've been there dozens of times, loads to do.

You didn't say you live in London OP - thought you were coming from abroad.
Having said that budget flights make Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh approx an hour away.

Plenty to do in and around Cambridge, and not far too!
