Luggage on trains

I have a choice of a small but deep suitcase or a larger but less deep case. Which is best?

How is luggage stowed on trains (Paddington-Devon) Is there anything I need to know?

There are luggage racks at the end of the carriage, or overhead shelves for smaller bags (rucksack size).

I should think a small but deep case would probably fit better.

You might want to keep an eye on the rack at stations, just to make sure your luggage is OK. And give yourself time to get to your luggage, get it off and then get out at your station.

Unless they announce that the train is in reverse formation, 1st class is nearest the buffer stops and coch A will be at the front of the train.
