Moving to hull, is There any discrimination towards black color?

Hi everyone,

I am actually new to hull from THE netherlands. My daughter and i are planning to relocate and i was wondering if There is any sort of racism. I am black and my daughter is mixed race. We are planning to get a house in Victoria Dock, is this an ok area to live? In Holland iTS very mixed however, when we visited hull, i hardly saw any black people. Please advise this mommy.

Hull is very white and working class. Is there a reason you are moving to hull in particular? In your situation I would choose an area that is more racially mixed. Racism is more common in areas that are not mixed.

I have family living in hull thats why....so, is Hull a no go?

Hi op, I'm from hull and think it's a misunderstood place. I feel People are friendly and welcoming. Especially if you have family already in the area.

There are some nice areas and villages surrounding it too.

I think if you have family support and live in a nice area then, you should go for it.
My brother in law loved there for 4 years and loved it.

I live in Beverley which is near Hull. It's a very white area, mostly British although a rising polish population. You will not find many other people who are black. I don't have a sense of it being a particularly racist place but it is a place where people are not used to seeing non white people. I don't know Victoria Dock very well but it's quite a new area (compared to other areas). Good luck!

I think that every place has very tolerant areas and some that are full of prejudice.

IME, the best places to be if you don't look, or talk, like the locals are:

areas favoured by academics or students
areas with a good level of education
areas with good earning incomes (these people often travel abroad so they are more accepting of other cultures)
trendy areas full of "alternative people" or with a good cultural mix.

Places to avoid:

mostly white, working class areas or those with a lot of social housing were there are hardly any foreigners.
and I would add to that, avoid small villages, they look cute and lovely but can be an absolute hell unless populated by commuters.

Victoria Dock is a lovely area with a good local primary school. Hull often gets a bad press but I love living in Hull and I was born and bred here!
I teach in a large secondary school in Hull (socially deprived, middle of big social housing estate) and I honestly find the vast majority of students are oblivious to skin colour. Their main curiousity would be over accent/new girl and probably teach me some swear words in your language! All schools in Hull are predominantly white but in my own personal experience this doesn't mean black/mixed race students stick out like a sore thumb, they are just accepted as another student.
Parents aren't as tolerant and we of course have the odd incident of a student quoting parental ignorance but it's normally the other students who'll turn on them and quite rightly tell them how it is!
A bustling cafe and food area is developing around Princes Avenue and Newland Avenue with many different tastes/cultures catered for and the best thing, Hull is cheap to live in!

I came to hull 11 years ago for uni and never left, (I'm now married with two children, complete with a hull accent) Victoria dock seems lovely for the few times I've been there, people on the whole are friendly and helpful, as with any city there are less desirable parts and parts I wouldn't want to walk through on my own at night but I don't know of a city where this isn't the case :-) there is a lovely friendly mummy group on Facebook which I recommend you join when/if you move that will help you meet new friends/find out what's happening locally etc

Oh wow, and There i was going to bed depressed hahaha. I work for THE US embassy in THE hague and Yes, i have alot of job offers in Hull. I am currently going thru a divorce and to be honest....color has never been an issue for me. My ex husband is white and my best friend hahah. I just want to raise my daughter into an English speaking country and ofcourse, i really want THE change. I have been to hull a couple of times and saw Some area's where i felt a chill. I just want to be in a friendly environment as we are such a humble, social family my 7 yr old daughter and i. Can Anyone advise on which area's are good to live in? I heard of THE bbc building, Victoria Dock and Beverly. I am looking for a good place near THE city.

Once again guys, you are ever so encouraging....feel free to hit this mommy with more tips

I think you are going to miss The Hague, go to York :-)

It is an hour away from Hull (probably less in train but, it is now very multicultural, it is a fabulous place to raise children: the vast majority of schools are considered good or outstanding, it is full of history, beautiful places to visit and it is very very safe.

Only downside is that the accommodation is a bit pricey but, the life style compensates for it.

I'm black, never had problems in my v frequent visits there since the 70s. People do have a good look, certainly, but they're not hostile.

Haha, am not going to Miss THE Hague. ITS time for change. I want to make Hull my first stop, to give my daughter and i time to adjust to a new country and this is crucial for her....she really enjoys her nieces. Personally, i would also have to adjust as Well like driving on THE other Side of THE road yikes!!!! I am not really out going as such so being a stay home, just raising my daughter and building my carreer Will just be fine for me for starters. But thanks alot for THE tips. I Will put York in mind, if it doesnt work for us....we shall opt to move:) any tips on other good neighbourhoods in hull apart from Beverly and Victoria near THE city? Anyone?

ive not heard anything about it being one city! im from hull and honestly even though you dont come across many black people ive never noticed any kind of racism! All 3 of them areas are lovely, Victoria dock and the BBC building are great for if you are working in or around the city centre, Beverley is quite far out but is lovely and a little town in itself, me and DH regularly go for a wander around Beverley. With a child i would maybe be more inclined towards Victoria Dock or Beverley as the BBC building is right in the middle of the city centre and is obviously very busy, right next to main roads, etc etc although im sure there are people living there who do have kids personally it would put me off a little bit.

Depending on how far out of the city you want to be there is also Anlaby and Hessle which are really nice too.

There are loads of nice places around hull and the majority of the people are very friendly and open minded

The avenues area is nice, wit,h lots going on. It has a good mix of students , families and professionals. It's Westbourne avenue, Victoria avenue, Marlborough avenue. There's a really nice children's park near by too x

I'd def go for the avenues. It's the arty, bono part of hull with loads of family friendly groups. Many of my friends have young families and really love the open, diverse community. There's a really nice vibe and if I moved back to hull that's exactly where I would live. Some of the Victorian houses are gorgeous!

The villages are pretty but can he insular. Good luck!

Would definitely consider the Avenues. Quite a mixed area compared to others in Hull, I love it! There is a FB group for the Avenues Association.

I am moving to Hull by the end of this year with my 6-year-old daughter for studies. We are both Black and African, moving from Africa - Namibia. Could you please give me feedback on this post as its very relevant to me

Did you end up moving to Hull? are you still there? how has your experience been so far regarding racism and discrimination? What areas would you recommend to live in? Is Victoria Dock still good? Any advise on schools?
