Where to stay in Bristol?

Any suggestions on good places to stay in Bristol either with a family room or even a serviced apartment? I used to live there but it's been so long and everything has changed so much I'm not sure where to start.
We only need 2-3 nights in August, for us and a 7yo.

Assuming you want hotels close to City Centre and attractions such as @Bristol and SS Great Britain, you may find the following hotels suitable.
Premier Inn - the one by the harbour near the Old Vic theatre / King street.
Travel lodge - budget option on Anchor Rd
Ibis hotel by the harbourside.
Plenty of good places to eat out along the harbourside from pizza Express to Zazaa bazaar.
Am not sure about the parking arrangements at each hotel though!

I had the same question! thank you, catslife for the advice. I will check all of those places out and then choose what is best for me. Very helpful!

Thanks for the suggestion but we've ended up booking www.brooksguesthousebristol.com as the Family Rocket looks like fun.

There is a Youth Hostel on the Docks. Not so much of a youth hostel, more a Relais Hotel. Also you can use Bristol university accommodation during the student's holidays.
