mid week break couple of hours drive from north east

dp and i are starting to think about where we will holiday this year. i am pregnant, were hoping to go mid july before schools break up and i will be 6 - 7 months along then.

we love places like york where there are nice shops, nice pubs and places to eat and touristy things to do.

were open to the type of accomodation we stay in, quite like the idea of a log cabin but bnb or even a caravan would be fine.

anyway weve done york and edinburgh and would like to try somewhere different, does anyone have any suggestions?

would consider driving further if it was something we fancied.

What about southern sheffield, on edge of the Peak district. Isn't there something like gullivers kingdom theme park

It's a beautiful part of the country.
There's the plague village at Eyam. Chatsworth house. Klumber Park and there's plenty of stuff here

If u are from the north east how can you live near Castleton?

i was talking about this to my dp yesterday and im guessing there is two castletons as i live very close by to one and i did wonder why people would go on holiday there.

in all fairness it is a lovely place but all there is to do is walk or eat and drink

Birmingham is supposed to have undergone massive regeneration, but you won't get the log cabin.

How long would it take to Glasgow? On the train maybe??

I'm slightly confused about where you live but if it is N Yorks then what about Northumberland? Loads of lovely cottages with log fires to stay in. Great places to go walking - long windswept beaches some of the more remote countryside in England. Lots of places to go out e.g. Lindisfarne, Hadrian's wall, masses of castles from Alnwick to less themeparky places like Bamburgh. Our favourite UK hol is Northumberland.

Yes, northumberland! Get a cottage in Bamburgh. It really is lovely there.

ive always fancied the lakes but think my dp would find it boring tbh.

glasgow is doable weve visited edinburgh a few times and i know its not a million miles away so worth looking into too.

bamburgh beach sounds good to me tho if weather is nice

Sorry about confusion, guess there are many Castletons in UK. To clarify, the Castleton I mentioned is North Derbyshire, lovely little village, Blue John Mines, little shops and pubs, nice walking.

Yay, bamburgh! Loads to do- Alnwick castle and gardens, heatherslaw mill mini steam railway, fish and chips in Seahouses, chillingham castle, the beach! Lots more, it's fab.

I'm confused. I thought from your OP that you lived in the North East so would already be familiar with Northumberland. IMO Northumberland has loads to offer for a holiday. Lots of sightseeing and lovely places to visit.

I live near Sheffield and wouldn't recommend Sheffield itself as a destination. What about somewhere near Leeds? There is loads to see in and around Leeds and it has a great shopping centre with loads of restaurants.
You can then take trips out to Otley, Ilkley, the Dales, Haworth, Saltaire.

yes im from teesside do northumberlands still a bit of a distance. our uk holidays as kids were spent scarborough way.

i fancy leeds and keep mentioning it to dp so might be an option. i am thinking leeds york and scarborough. like 1 or 2 nights in each.

Ah in which case different Castleton from the one mentioned on this thread so maybe Peak District could be a possibility for you?

Chatsworth is fabulous and you can easily fill a day there. Haddon Hall is another little gem. They are both near Bakewell which is definitely worth a visit. I could suggest loads of lovely walks but I won't seeing as you will be 6 - 7 months gone by then so maybe won't feel like it

Oh and this Castleton has lots of show caves. Blue John as mentioned. Also Speedwell which gives you a boat trip. Then there is one in the centre of Castleton which glories in the name of "The Devil's Arse".

Harrogate or Leeds are both fab
