Isle of Man for a long weekend - recommendations

Vaguely thinking of going for the MayDay BH weekend. We have never been so I don't know what to expect, what there is to do. We would just be 2 adults and we like walking and eating out and sight seeing.

Any thoughts anyone?

Douglas has lots of great eateries including the very trendy Noa's bakehouse, as does Peel (next to the viking museum and castle) which is beautiful for a day trip. I highly recommend hiring bikes to explore the island. Also by May the train should be on from Douglas into the island which takes in a beautiful scenic route. The Calf of Man is also a nice trip to make one afternoon, near the oldest built up part of the island.

We went several years ago and found this www.cicerone.co.uk/product/detail.cfm/book/399/title/the-isle-of-man#.VRATx-HEalc really useful for walking.

If you like castles, definitely make time for Peel and Castle Rushen.

Hoping to go back with the DSs this summer!

Oh Thanks. BlueChampagne - we have had books in the Cicerone series before and have a very good one for the Pyrenees that is written by the same author, Terry Marsh. So we would definitely look for that. I will discuss more with DH toight.

I would hire a car or bring your own if possible, then you can easily get to some of the more remote, beautiful spots. Eary Cushlin for example, which is along the west side of the island is one of my favourite places to walk, the views in the late afternoon are stunning.

My friends enjoyed a boat trip that we took on the MV Karina from Douglas right down to the South & back, not sure if they would run in early May, but worth looking into.

Re restaurants, try Tanroagan in Douglas, the seafood is excellent.

Just so happens we're now booked to go back this summer!
