Well the Lakes are utterly beautiful. Windermere gets crowded but you can soon shake off the crowds. There are boat trips and Castles to see. Sizerh Castle on the way from the South and Beatrice Potter in Hawkshead. Keswick is a favourite as well.
The shops are wonderful. Ambleside is great as are any of the smaller towns such as Hawkshead.
Go on Ownersdirect, as you might still find something available. My favourite place is Waswater as it is more remote, but we like walking.
A good and cheap B&B is Brunlea. It is just off the High street at Stanger St. Keswick. It is clean and basic, does a good breakfast etc.
Make sure you have some proper gear if you intend to walk.
Lucy's on a plate is a wonderful place to eat, but you will be spoilt for choice really.
Once you have been you will be blown away.

Don't know much about the lakes but the isle of Arran is amazing.

I think N. Yorks is better than the Lakes for Oct half-term.
Still lots of beautiful countryside and outdoor activities, but you're close to Leeds/York in case it's monsoon weather every day and you want a break from getting wet. We stay in Pickering, in the N. York moors - it's 30mins to Whitby for dry days, and 45 into York for wet. Plus there's a good leisure centre and a steam railway in Pickering itself. have a look here.

I'd like to do Windermere, Bowness as I think we'd like that for our first time, although touristy we will have the car so can drive/walk around.

October can be one of the best times of year in Lake District - cool enough for walking, but still warm enough for boat trips on the lakes. The fell sides will be starting to show autumn colours, the air and views can be clearer than in summer.

Let me know how 'energetic' you all are, what you hope to do, and I'll advise further.

I first went there fifty years ago, and my absolute favourite place.
