Hello. Just started work at Lincoln uni but can't abide lincolnshire in terms of a place to live. Am currently looking at places within an hour and wondered if anyone could advise on stamford and if its a doable commute ? I have heard its very nice and am looking for somewhere with nice shops, cafe culture, delis restaurants etc. My other option is Oakham. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks

Stamford is lovely, but it's a good hour to Lincoln. It would definitely fit your description though! Oakham would be about a 40 minute commute, oakham is nice (good gym too) but not as nice as Stamford.

Thanks so much for your message. Is Oakham really only an hour to lincoln ? It's funny, I thought that it was further than stamford? Trying to coninvee my husband that stamford is commutable and would give us the quality of life we are after, our other option is west bridgford in Notts but omng from Warwickshire I have been told that stamford as that cotswold feel :-)

Oops! Sorry! Oakham is a good hour too, got confused, with where oakham was in relation to a1.

Why not have a day out and visit them both? I think commute might be a bit long though.

Stamford (which is in Lincolnshire) and Oakham (Rultland) are only 9 miles apart. Stamford is in the A1, so the journey would probably be quicker.

Stamford is on the same swathe of golden stone that stretches across the country, so it does look like Cotswolds as its built of the same stuff. It's since town, but I'm not sure it'll ever shake off its 'stuffed with retired colonels' reputation.

Thanks Edith, do you think it is a doable commute to Lincoln ?

Stamford definitely a bit closer to a1 than Oakham, both are lovely. For me it would depend on how difficult to drive into lincoln. If you have an hour drive up a1 and then have to queue into city that would be too much for me but I commuted an hour and ten for a few years and didn't mind as it was mostly driving not queuing!! Have you looked at Newark or Southwell as options in nottinghamshire that are a bit closer?

Stamford is long but doable, perhaps (go across the up A15). You'd either do the same from Oakham (9 miles longer) or try to find a shorter diagonal route that's more as the crow flies. Snag being that the main roads aren't convenient for that. You are looking at extending your day by an hour each way (assuming decent traffic).

If you want sleepy tea-shop type places, have you considered Southwell or Retford in Notts?

(Awaits hordes of residents telling you they're Nothing Like That).

Think it's ok wrt queuing if you get to Lincoln before 8! I agree queuing is miserable. We love Southwell and like stamford is more expensive but smaller, thus less on the market (well under 500k anyway ;) )
