Booked a week in Suffolk - what shall we do?

It's near Peasenhall so more or less equidistant from Aldeburgh and Southwold, not far from Dunwich either. Dcs are 7, 8 and 10 and we like beaches, walking, cycling, visiting interesting places - low key kind of stuff.

What are the beaches like? Any recommendations?

Any wet weather ideas?

Oh and any recommendations of places to eat would be good too. We're at the stage where they don't have to be especially family friendly (as long as children are actually allowed )

Anyone got any ideas for me?

There are plenty of ideas and if you look on the local talk boards, you'll also find some similar threads to this with posters adding their suggestions.

Have a look and then if there's nothing that appeals, we can think of more ideas :)

Ooh, just back from a week near there. Would suggest checking out:

Framlingham Castle

Orford Castle (plus Framlingham and Orford both look really nice villages for a wander. We ate at the Jolly Sailor in Orford which was quite pricey but v nice food - child portions are huge, almost like an adult meal)

Aldeburgh and Southwold themselves, again just for a wander and a play on the beach

Crabbing at Walberswick is fun and virtually free - only cost is a line or two, bait and bucket

There's a good soft play place between Lowestoft and Kessingland - adventure island, I think it's called - in case of rain

Africa Alive at Kessingland is a great zoo/safari park

Will be back if I remember any more!

Walk on the beach at Covehithe.

Rowing boat on Thorpeness Mere, crabbing at Walberswick, Sutton Hoo , fish and chips at Aldeburgh ( best ever), Orford Castle,the pier at Southwold is great fun .Easton Farm Park worth a visit and Woodbridge is a nice little town

The Sailor in Orford down near the Quay was nice when we were there last year.
Beaches are mostly shingle - look for 'witch stones' (stones with holes in them)

We're heading to Southwold for a week on Saturday - was just about to post a similar request (altho our DCS are younger at 4 and 18mo). I like the look of the lido at Beccles, does anyone know how heated it is??

The lido info is here. It is heated and has always been warm enough for us. We love it- a superb facility.

How warm would you say it needs to be to have a fun time at the lido Lesuffolk? Say 20 degrees? 25? Where we live there used to be several lidos (very very sadly they've all gone now but they were all unheated and filled with sea water - and have been closed since I was a child - so I can't fathom how warm a day it would need to be for the lido to be fun rather than, ahem, 'bracing'!!!

It is as warm as most indoor pools I have used but obviously the air temp can vary. On a warm to hot day it is wonderful and on a cooler day, you'll be fine in the water (plenty warm enough) but you'll need towel around the shoulders when you get out.

They are pretty good about replying to emails or calls so you could always ring them to get a daily water temp?

I can't resist a lido, we'll just go - we'll take tons of towels to wrap up if needed. Really can't wait, nothing like swimming outdoors.
