Ideas for week holiday on south or east coast

Can anyone recommend a south coast destination (not as far west as Devon and Cornwall) for a weeks holiday for a toddler, parents and grandparents? We're looking for somewhere near a nice beach but not a too busy or tacky seaside resort. Somewhere to keep us all entertained for a week. We're travelling from Cambridge. Thanks!

I'm off to west bay near Bridport in dorset tomorrow. Not stayed there before, but know the area. Not far from sidmouth, weymouth, lyme regis, etc

Swanage is nice. I like the beach at Charmouth but its quiet. My top spot would be Lyme Regis, its quite civilised and not at all tacky :)
