Where to eat out in Edinburgh within walking distance of The Castle

We are staying very near to the Castle and would love some good recommendations on where to eat out in the evening. We have two children over 7.

Oh and anything else we should do there other than visiting the castle and the zoo.

If you head down the high street from the castle there are quite a lot of restaurants down there. Once you get to the bridges you have places like Pizza Express, Prezzo, Bella Italia and Pizza Hut.

Camera Obscura just beside the castle is fantastic. If you have tesco days out vouchers, I'd recommend using them.

Do a bus tour too. My 2 have lived in Edinburgh all their lives and love the bus tours.

National Museum of Scotland (free entry) tons of things to see, esp the natural history stuff.
Food - move off the High Street for more individual choices. There's various good places on George IVth Bridge hitch is close to you.
The bus tour is always good as is Princes St Gardens.
Museum of Childhood worth a visit too.

George IV Bridge is nearby and has a good range of restaurants, to name a few, the Outsider, the Cellar Door, The Tower (part of the Museum (Chambers Street: expensive)' the Witchery (expensive); Ondine (Expensive). There are quite a lot of pretty generic Italian and Indian restaurants on the High Street: uninspiring.

Victoria Street is off George IV Bridge and offer Howie's, the Grain Store and Maison Bleu, all pretty reasonable.

Oh and for places to visit, do go to the Botanic in the north of the city, they are so beautiful with fab views of the skyline, lovely Victorian glass houses and a couple of nice cafes. There is a tourist bus that drops you off at the West Gate.

There is a prezzo and pizza express on North Bridge

There is a family friendly Italian called Vittoria on George IV Bridge - also a Nandos opposite

Or go down to the Grassmarket and go to Mamma's pizza

all withing walking distance - enjoy!

Can you tell me if The Grain Store and The Cellar Door are suitable for children?

Perhaps not The Grain Store, maybe a bit formal and pricey but the Cellar Door is very friendly. Perhaps sound them out about children.
